2022-2023 Sustained Investigation (1)
Throughout all of my life emotion has been a prominent component. I have always found it interesting how people can bond over feelings. I often inquire about how I can connect with the people that view my art. I have been asking how to invoke feelings in the viewer. I’ve learned that different colors, textures, and mediums all have an impact on how art is interpreted. In my sustained investigation I worked to create work that shows what it feels like to experience a wide variety of emotions. I surveyed my classmates to see what colors they associate with different emotions, and I learned that everyone sees things differently. That is why color choice played a big aspect in my sustained investigation. I also decided to explore different mediums, such as chalk pastels, charcoal, and paint. When I was wanting to create a strong impact on the viewer I used bold mediums, such as the charcoal and pen which contrast greatly with the white of the paper as you can see on piece 2 and 5, which show the feelings of being trapped and needing to fake you being happy.
In the end
I am so thankful for this sustained investigation, I have grown so much with ideation and paint application. I was able to bring together a routine with vine charcoal for sketching, and layering a thin background, then adding the thicker paint to bring attention to the main focal point. I was able to learn how colors play into emotions and how if you have to colors together, how does that make the viewer feel. I explored a lot with hands, I learned that position and lighting of the hands can actually have so much emotion, even though it isn't a face. Exploring with more painterly strokes as well come across in my paintings which I greatly love. I hope you enjoy this investigation as much as I did.
