-Undeniably Me-
Materials used: Vine charcoal, Compressed charcoal, Charcoal pencils
Size: 12" x 18" x 0"
Processes used: For this piece I used a reference picture of myself, I made sure to comeback in-between sessions to make sure I enjoyed how it looked. I wanted it to look realistic but still have an artistic feel to it so I added "messy" charcoal around the edges.
-Another world-
Materials used: Medium and small pen
Size: 7 1/2" x 10" x 0"
Processes used: For this piece I used un-copywritten pictures, and I collaged them together into something I liked. I used curved lines to create shape, and I used more pen in areas to create depth.
-Contemplating Golem-
Materials used: Graphite pencils
Size: 7 1/2" x 10" x 0"
Processes used: I used a sculpture as a reference for this piece and I used different types of graphite pencils to create depth in the piece.
-Dream Sunset-
Materials used: Acrylic Paint
Size: 12" x 10" x 0"
Processes used: I used a picture reference to match the colors of this piece. I used multiple layers to achieve depth and texture in in the piece
-Despair-
Materials used: Block print, Printing Ink
Size: 6" x 9" x 0"
Processes used: For this piece I was really inspired by German Expressionism, so I really played into that, using strong lines. I want it to really express emotion so I showed what I was feeling by exaggerating the features such as the eyes and the shadows on the face.
-Glorifying Despair-
Materials used: Block print, Printing Ink
Size: 12" x 16" x 0"
Processes used: This is the last piece put into one bigger piece. I was inspired by the Marylin Monroe piece by Andy Warhol. I wanted it to show the pretty people try to cover their emotions with.
-Beautifully Departed-
Materials used: Watercolor Paint
Size: 15" x 21" x 0"
Processes used: For this piece I used complementary colors to create both like and dark and contrast. The teal is used to draw the eyes throughout the whole piece and to darken the red-orange.
-Cornered-
Materials used: Charcoal, vine charcoal
Size: 14 1/2" x 12" x 0"
Processes used: Posing, hand idea exploration, shading
Sustained Investigation Process: My main question for this piece was how can I use charcoal to enhance the feeling of being trapped and cornered. I picked charcoal because of how intense it is, just like emotions.
For this sustained investigation (1) I practiced with this piece by trying out different compositions as well as lighting. I was able to experiment with different concepts, which is where I ended up with a shadow band. I was able to go back and revise by adding texture to walls, and darkening the shadows.
-Dysmorphia-
Materials used: Acrylic paint, vine charcoal
Size: 10" x 8" x 0"
Processes used: Posing, shading, layering, color glazing
Sustained Investigation Process: My main question for this piece was how can I display the feeling of being disgusted with yourself and your looks.
For this sustained investigation (1) I took many pictures to decide on the right one. I decided on the green for a background because I thought it looked gross and would encompass the feeling. I also used a vibrant pink to greatly contrast the green, it gives it a raw, sickly feel.
-Diverted Existence-
Materials used: Acrylic paint, pencil
Size: 11" x 14" x 0"
Processes used: Posing, shading, layering, blending,
Sustained Investigation Process: (1) My main question for this piece was how can I make myself look like I am being taken over by the background, wanting it to be overtaking and distracting. Just like how life is nowadays, having the ability to go into a different world on a whim, being able to know everyone's thoughts all the time. Seeing all the news happening and it's almost always bad. I look sickly to give off the feel that the phone is taking the life away from me, or that I've deprived myself to stay on my phone.
-Almost-
Materials used: paper, fabric, photo paper
Size: 8" x 5" x 0"
Processes used: Posing, layering, placement experimentation
Sustained Investigation Process: For this piece is a play on Adam and god, but giving it a more feminine feel with the fabric. I wanted these two hands to be so close together that it was unbearable. Were they letting go? Are they about to touch? That is up to you
-Tranquil-
Materials used: Soft pastels, Soft pastel pencils
Size: 12" x 16" x 0"
Processes used: Posing, color exploration,
Sustained Investigation Process: My guiding with this piece what how colors effect the over all feel of a piece, what colors do you associate with being calm and content?
For this sustained investigation (1) I had to practice a lot due to it being my first time with chalk pastels, trying out textures, blending and layering. I experimented with spraying a fixative and layering more opaque colors on top of the duller ones. I revised this peice by fixing up the line variation, and the colors in the face.
-Beyond Light-
Materials used: Acrylic paint, Vine charcoal
Size: 10" x 12" x 0"
Processes used: taking reference picture, color and emotion, glazing, layering
Sustained Investigation Process: For this piece I asked myself how can I use the background and play it into the hand. I wanted it to represent myself and how I felt at that time of being loved, and supported. I wanted the fingers to glow as if blood was flowing through it and achieved that with the brighter orange/pink color.
My sustained investigation (1) shows practice and experimentation because I took many pictures deciding which one best fit the emotion of feeling loved and comforted.
-Are You Happy Now?-
Materials used: Micron Pen
Size: 10" x 10 1/2" x 0"
Processes used: Posing, layering,
Sustained Investigation Process: My guiding question for this was how does different mediums effect how the viewer? How can you make emotion come across in a piece and on a face.
My sustained investigation (1) shows practice because I made sure to practice and look back at previous works for ideas on shading. I experimented with different hatching such as the scribbles and cross hatching. It shows revision because I looked back at the piece and revised cropping to make the balance between the black of the hair and the white of the page equal, and shading to accentuate the darks and lights of the piece.
-Desiderium-
Materials used: Watercolor Paint, water soluble graphite, graphite
Size: 6" x 18" x 0"
Processes used: Researching emotion, posing, brainstorming
Sustained Investigation Process: My inquiry for this piece was how can I put a feeling on paper. Also how we relate different colors and symbols to emotion. How time passing leads to nostalgia
For this sustained investigation (1) I first explored ideas of symbolism and color. Such as what symbols can represent time passing, I found out a swinging clock and a wilting rose fit with it. I also experimented with what the different sections had to be. And how they would relate to each other. I practiced with water color and how it went with graphite. And used little colors with it mostly being a white and gray piece to represent nostalgia.
-Torn-
Materials used: Acrylic paint, embroidery thread, fire
Size: 16"x 21" x 0"
Processes used: For this pieced I used burning, embroidery, posing, color experimenting, and multi-media experimenting
Sustained Investigation Process: For this being my first peice I wanted to really show emotion with color, and multi-media. What would ripping skin look like and feel like, what colors do you imagine with that feeling?
This shows practice because I made sure to test the burning on a separate peice of canvas and what the rips would look like. I experimented with embroidery and fire in my art which I have never explored with before. It shows revision because I was able to look back at it and wonder what could make this more impactful.
-Memories-
Materials used: Acrylic paint, Colored pencils, Graphite pencil, Gesso, Gloss medium
Size: 10" x 15" x 0"
Processes used: For this piece I thought back on some of my favorite memories, and I wrote one down as the mountains in the background to create texture. I used watered down acrylic to create the texture within the trees and the watercolor-like effect in the sky.
-Sketchbook Cover-
Materials used: Prisma Color Pencils, Sharpie Markers
Size: 8.5" x 11" x 0"
Processes used: For this piece I drew DoodleBob from SpongeBob because it is something I enjoy drawing. I included the bubbles and the jellyfish as well. I love lots of vibrant colors so I added those in a tie-dye like pattern for the background.
