Besides the Writing Projects, homework will typically consist of exercises from your Writing Connect 3.0 and Writing Unleashed readings. It will be submitted online through Canvas. Homework submitted past the deadline may not be accepted for credit.
All paragraphs and essays will be graded for ideas, organization, topic sentences, development, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Writing assignments are due at the beginning of class on the assigned day in electronic copy in SIMCHECK (we will discuss SIMCHECK during Week 1 and throughout the semester).
Late papers are lowered one letter grade and are not accepted past the week it is due. For instance, if a paper is due on Friday and it is late, you have until the end of the following Friday to submit it for any credit. However, no late work will be accepted during the last two weeks of the semester.
Revision Portfolio: You will be required to revise one writing project as part of the portfolio that will be due at the end of the semester. This portfolio will be discussed throughout the semester.
Grades will be determined by the following weighted percentages
Discussion Posts, Quizzes, and Other Stuff: 10%
Connect 3.0 Activities 10%
Writing Projects (Prewriting / Peer Reviews / Drafts / Reflections): 50%
E-Portfolio Google Site and Course Reflection: 20%
Final Comprehensive Grammar Quiz: 10%
Total: 100%
While I am not an expert at math, I can show you how these percentages are factored in Canvas as the semester progresses. Canvas also has a "What If?" feature so you play around in the gradebook to see what you need on future assignments to achieve a certain grade.
Each student must receive a grade of "A," "B," or "C" in COM 088 to be eligible to enroll in COM 101.
F 50% – 59%
Any student who passes COM 088 with a grade of “A,” “B,” or “C” will be directed to take COM 101 + COM 098 (otherwise known as the COM 101 Bridge course). The instructor may recommend that students who pass with a 90% or above may progress directly to a regular section of COM 101 without the supplemental COM 098 course. The dean will sign a permission slip to allow those students direct admission into a regular COM 101 section. Both of these options award transfer credit in COM.
