I’ll be honest, making time to spend with God each day is not one of my strong suits. I really have to get in a habit of doing it to make that commitment and it is something I’m working on. I have had to learn that quiet time and spending time with God has nothing to do with feelings. My feelings about my day, where I am with God or whether I want to ready God’s word should not play any role in deciding when, where, how or even if I spend time with God.
I reposted a quote on Instagram recently that said, ‘All I’m saying is if you can watch a Netflix series for 7 hours straight, then you are perfectly capable of praying and reading your bible for at least an hour’. This really challenged me and is something I have to tell myself almost every day, that if I can make time for something else, I can make time for my Creator, my Saviour, my heavenly Father. I know it isn’t easy, seeing people on Instagram and YouTube with their #aesthetic photos and bibles makes it seem like everyone is finding it easy but you.
When I do read my bible (I’m really trying!) I tend to do it at night. I so much prefer to be able to take my time and spend an hour or more with God, if that is the way the time goes, rather than rush through it in the morning. It is also so important to me to pray before I start. I know that in the times that I don’t pray I find the time so much less productive and I always get distracted.
If you’re wondering how I choose what to read, this year I am doing the chronological bible in a year plan from the YouVersion Bible App. In the past I have gone through a specific book of the bible in depth or followed plans that teach on specific topics such as singleness, relationships and modesty.
For me reading the bible can sometimes be a challenge, it is not easy, and you can get to the end of your reading and feel like you haven’t learnt anything, and you know what? That’s okay.Keep reading. You might learn something from that passage the next time you read it. Reading the bible is how we as Christians get to know God and His character. The bible is called God’s Word because it tells us all about Him. The things He did and the people He chose as well as the Good News of His son.
I want to lay down a challenge for you this coming week, read your bible every day. You can follow along on the Becoming You Co Instagram page (@becomingyouco) and use the hashtag #BYCbiblechallenge. I'll be sharing my bible time and we can work through it together. I want to challenge and encourage you to see how your life can be changed by spending daily time with God.
Blessings
