Unlearning Racism in Geoscience
Unlearning Racism in Geoscience
URGE Program
Unlearning Racism in Geoscience (URGE: www.urgeoscience.org) is a community-wide journal-reading and policy-design curriculum to help Geoscientists unlearn racism and improve accessibility, justice, equity, and inclusion (AJEDI) in the Geology discipline.
URGE’s primary objectives are to (1) deepen the community’s knowledge of the effects of racism on the participation and retention of black, brown, and indigenous people in Geoscience, (2) use the existing literature, expert opinion, and personal experiences to develop anti-racist policies and strategies, and (3) share, discuss, and modify anti-racist policies and strategies within a dynamic community network and on a national stage. By meeting these objectives, we hope that Geoscience departments and societies will be able to implement a well-researched crowd-sourced group of anti-racist policies.

Program Initiation
The original URGE program ran in 2021 and was divided into 8 units, and completion of each unit involved the submission of a deliverables document. You can find the WWU deliverables from the original 8 units on both the URGE website: https://urgeoscience.org/pod/western-washington-university-pod/ or on our department website: https://geology.wwu.edu/wwu-urge-pod.

Ongoing Work
The WWU URGE Pod consists of Geology Department undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, and faculty. The Pod meets twice per academic quarter‒ once during the first week to give updates and once during the penultimate week to hold a discussion surrounding anti-racism in Geoscience and STEM. During the first meeting of each academic year, the WWU URGE Pod identifies 2-3 top priority tasks to address for that year, then assigns a lead and group of volunteers for each task. You can find dates for these meetings in our department events calendar: https://geology.wwu.edu/events.
