1. The Union of South Africa existed since 1910 and became a sovereign independent state after implementation of the Status of the Union Act, 1934 (Act No. 69 of 1934). To a large extent former ties with the United Kingdom were still upheld until the Status of the Union Act was repealed by the Republic of South Africa Constitution Act of 1961, effectively ending South Africa's membership of the Commonwealth of Nations.
