Bagpipe Lessons and More

The West Virginia Highland Dancers proudly offers lessons that go beyond dance — celebrating the full spectrum of Scottish arts and heritage.

Our bagpipe lessons introduce students to Scotland’s most iconic instruments. Under the guidance of instructor Matt Taylor, students learn proper piping technique, musical expression, and the cultural history behind traditional tunes. Lessons are available for beginner and novice pipers, whether you aspire to perform with Highland dancers, compete, or simply play for personal enjoyment.

In addition to music, WVHD offers Scottish culture lessons designed to deepen students’ appreciation for the traditions that inspire Highland dance and music. Topics include Scottish history and literature, Highland dress and tartans, national songs, and customs celebrated throughout Scotland’s storied past.

These programs aim to foster a well-rounded understanding of Scottish heritage and how it relates to Appalachia, combining education, artistry, and cultural pride. Classes are offered in Elkins, West Virginia, with virtual options available via Zoom for students outside the area.

Whether you dream of playing the pipes, exploring Scotland’s traditions, or enhancing your connection to Highland dance, the West Virginia Highland Dancers invites you to join in keeping Scotland’s legacy alive.
