Experience the strength, grace, and tradition of Scotland—right here in West Virginia. The West Virginia Highland Dancers brings the beauty and athleticism of Highland dance to life through dedicated instruction, spirited performances, and a commitment to excellence that spans generations.
About the Group
For more than 25 years, the West Virginia Highland Dancers (WVHD) has been dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Scottish Highland dance throughout West Virginia and beyond. Under the direction of Katy Dillon, a certified instructor with the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD), WVHD provides comprehensive instruction in traditional Highland dance for dancers ages 3 through adult.
Classes are offered in Elkins, West Virginia, as well as online via Zoom, welcoming students from across the state and around the world. Dancers may train for recreation, performance, or competition through the championship level, with a focus on precision, artistry, and personal growth.
Over the years, WVHD dancers have achieved remarkable success — competing and performing across the United States and in Scotland, and even representing West Virginia on an international stage. One of the group’s dancers had the honor of performing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, while others have qualified to compete at the U.S. National Highland Dancing Championships and at events throughout North America and in Scotland.
Beyond dance technique, the group emphasizes leadership, discipline, and community involvement. Students are encouraged to take active roles in organizing performances, developing public speaking skills, and mentoring younger dancers. All students have the opportunity to study dance theory and pursue certification, preparing them to become the next generation of Highland dance instructors.
Whether performing for local festivals, parades, and cultural celebrations, or representing West Virginia at international competitions, the West Virginia Highland Dancers takes pride in fostering confidence, cultural appreciation, and a lifelong love of Highland arts.
