One of Harrison County's longest serving and most successful high school baseball coaches, Robert Shields, has made Bridgeport baseball synonymous with winning in West Virginia during a career that has already spanned 29 years and has no signs of slowing down. During his three decades as coach of the Indians, Shields has managed to capture four Class AA state titles in 1993, 2000, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021(AAA) while earning runner-up status in Class AA in 1992 and 1994 and in Class AAA in 2010. Even in years when Shields and his Indians didn't win it all, they were still winning. His clubs have captured 19 regional titles and 31 sectional championships to date. As of 2016, Shields has had more than 30 of his student-athletes be named to either the Class AAA or Class AA West Virginia All-State first teams. All of the success by his players has translated into college opportunities as well. More than 65 players under his tutelage have signed to play college baseball with 44 of those players competing for at least two or more years. Shields has an overall record of 706 wins and 222 losses during his 29 years, which include 20 seasons of 20 wins or more and four seasons of 30 wins or more. Not once in his tenure have the Indians had a losing season. Shields has been a member of the West Virginia Baseball Coaches Association since its inception. He has also coached the North squad in multiple North-South baseball contests. which is put on annually by the WVBCA. In 1993, Shields was honored as the West Virginia State Baseball Coach of the Year.
