At West University Elementary we understand the importance of wellness as it impacts social emotional learning skills
WUES looks at wellness as being an active process of making optimal health and well-being choices rather than remaining in a static state. In the words of Maya Angelou, "when we know better, we do better." Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is also a process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. These skills provide the foundation for successful relationships with others- and with ourselves. We can help by modeling, teaching, and allowing opportunities to practice these skills in a safe environment. We encourage adults and students alike to explore the resources shared on this page.

Hello friends! My name is Becky Soderberg and I am the school counselor here at WUES. I'm passionate about kindness, dogs, music, running, learning, empowering students and adults alike to own and embrace their true selves, and breaking the stigma against mental health. This is my second year at WUES! Previously in HISD I've been a special education teacher, a classroom teacher, and a counselor. I graduated from Keene State College in New Hampshire with a Bachelors in Psychology, and have a masters in education in school counseling from Lamar University.
*Please note that no dogs were harmed in the above photo. As it turns out, he just hates wearing hats.*
Parents, teachers, and students are all able to request a meeting with the counselor to address any concerns, or to check-in if needed. Regularly scheduled short term counseling services (6-8 weeks at 30-45 minutes/session) are provided for students in both individual and/or small group settings. Lessons that target specific social and emotional skills are also taught whole group in students' classrooms. You may fill out one of the appropriate forms below, or feel free to reach out to me via email at rebecca.soderberg@houstonisd.org if you have any additional questions.
If you are a parent or guardian and would like to request to meet with the counselor to discuss any concerns you might have for your student, please click here, or open the camera on your phone to scan the above QR code.
