Elmhurst Quarry Flood Sirens
Elmhurst Quarry Flood Sirens
The Elmhurst Quarry features two (as far as we know) small sirens to warn of flooding when the quarry begins filling with water during extreme weather events. Water is pulled from the Salt Creek and dumped into the quarry to protect areas downstream from flooding as severe as they otherwise would with no diversion in the flow of water. Due to the quarry being extremely deep and filling rather fast, small sirens are utilized in case staff or other personnel are in the quarry during a flood event.

HISTORY - Elmhurst had a system of 6 Federal Sign and Signal Thunderbolt 1000s that were installed in or around 1967, which were replaced in 2007/2008 by 6 T-121s after the town fell for God knows what from ASC. The town also had a Darley Champion at the fire station on York Rd north of the Metra/UP tracks, and possibly more fire sirens given the presence of one.

FS&S Thunderbolt 1000 - At the school located at Swain Ave & Van Buren St. This unit, along with a few, if not all of the other Thunderbolts in town, was directly replaced on the same pole with a T-121. Photo taken 2007 (Google Earth)
