2D Finite Element hydraulic model of Manati River, North Coast,Puerto Rico.
To disseminate my research, I publish in technical journals. Some of them are included in this portfolio in Investigations section.
I often do reviews for the "Journal of Hydraulic Engineering" . Have been member of technical committees to organize professional conferences. As an author I have written manuals and guides for the academy and for the agencies of the Government of Puerto Rico.
Among my professional affiliations are the College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico (CIAPR), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the International Association of Hydraulic Research (IAHR).
I have more than 23 years of experience in teaching, research and consulting practice in the field of Hydraulic and Hydrological Engineering. In the academy I have held administrative positions, among which are: Director of the Research and Development Center of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, Director of the Department of Engineering Science and Materials (previously know as Department of General Engineering) and Associate Director of the Center for Hemispheric Cooperation.
I was Director of the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of the University of Puerto Rico for many years and, I have been Associate Director of the Research Institute on Water Resources and the Environment of Puerto Rico (PRWRERI) from 1995 to the present. Visit this this link to know about PRWRERI. Currently I continue as a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Surveying of the UPR-Mayaguez.
My research areas include hydraulic transients, hydraulic modeling of piping systems, one- and two-dimensional river and channel models, erosion studies and sediment transport. In the area of bio-engineering I have worked on erosion models and natural coatings to prevent sedimentation in natural channels. I am currently investigating the combined effects of floods due to extreme rainfall combined with storm surges. For more details visit the Research section in menu of this portfolio.
As a private consultant, I do Hydrologic/Hydraulic studies, hydrodynamic studies and studies on sediment transport and scour in bridges using a wide variety of commercial models; as well as, my own creations. In the Consulting section you will find more details on projects carried out.
I enjoy teaching formal education for master's and doctoral students. Also enjoy offering practical training to engineers and other professionals. I have created advanced courses in the aforementioned subjects and offered seminars in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Dominican Republic. Currently, I regularly offer courses for the Transportation Technology Transfer Center of Puerto Rico (http://prltap.org/esp/) in design of storm sewer systems, hydrological / hydraulic studies, erosion control in projects and, bridge scour.
