WriteCoach aims to meet a need that many teachers and students across grade levels struggle with: wanting to grow as writers, but not being able to apply meaningful feedback immediately. Students will often complete a writing task, submit it, and then receive feedback a week or so later. Oftentimes, when they receive the feedback, they have already moved on to the next assignment and are not as engaged with what was previously done, so they skim the feedback and may not truly absorb it and apply it to their future work. Additionally, the feedback may often be general, such as "include more detail," and students struggle to understand what this means, looks like, or where to apply it. For teachers, despite how hard they try, it can be difficult to provide detailed and timely feedback when they are working with six classes of 30 students. They also feel the stress of ensuring that assignments are turned back on time, as students express significantly lower levels of motivation if the feedback takes greater than 10 days (Fisher et al., 2025, p. 628). Therefore, WriteCoach aims to mediate this problem by using AI-generated feedback to offer a fresh take on writing training by providing prompt, individualized comments to enhance students’ writing skills (Mohammed & Khalid, 2025, p. 7).
Elementary Applications:
WriteCoach can play a transformative role in the elementary English Language Arts classroom, where students are just beginning to build confidence and identity as writers. At this stage, feedback has a great impact, as it can either motivate students to keep exploring their ideas or discourage them from taking creative risks. By using mobile intelligence to make feedback instant and appropriate, WriteCoach can help young writers understand that it's a process focused on growing through revision. This AI-generated feedback offers tailored learning experiences that promote self-regulated learning, confidence, and reduced anxiety, encouraging learners to reflect on mistakes and successes, supporting emotional intelligence development (Mohammed & Khalid, 2025, p. 21).
For instance, in taking a look at the British Columbia Ministry of Education Grade 6 English Language Arts Curriculum Outlines (n.d), two curricular competencies are:
Assess and refine texts to improve their clarity, effectiveness, and impact according to purpose, audience, and message.
Use an increasing repertoire of conventions of Canadian spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Therefore, WriteCoach can directly support both of these competencies by providing students with immediate feedback that guides them in assessing and refining their writing while reinforcing proper conventions. As students draft, the program highlights where clarity, organization, or word choice can be improved, prompting them to think critically about how their ideas are presented and how effectively they communicate their message to the intended audience. Additionally, WriteCoach also flags spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, modeling correct usage according to Canadian conventions. This ultimately helps students learn to revise deliberately, rather than just fixing errors that a teacher tells them to. In doing so, students are working in concert with the AI creatively and iteratively, which positions the learner as the driver in the writing process (Escalante, Pack, & Barrett, 2023, p. 3), allowing students to practice these competencies consistently and confidently throughout the writing process.
In addition, WriteCoach also benefits diverse learners who may lack one-on-one support from teachers or educational assistants by providing personalized, scaffolded support that adapts to individual needs. For students who struggle with language, literacy, or attention, the program breaks writing into manageable segments, offering one suggestion at a time with clear directions. Therefore, students with learning differences or those who require extra assistance can receive immediate guidance in a personalized, independent way.
Secondary Applications:
In secondary English classrooms, WriteCoach can support students in developing more sophisticated writing skills, helping them refine arguments, organize ideas, and communicate more clearly. As students draft literary analyses, essays, or research projects, the program can provide real-time feedback on clarity, flow, and coherence, prompting them to incorporate textual evidence, improve transitions, and strengthen paragraph structure. For instance, if students are writing an essay on Macbeth, they may make general comments, such as "Macbeth is ambitious." However, they might not include direct references to the text that show how Macbeth is ambitious, or what specific events prompted this shift in his nature. This can negatively affect their understanding and subsequent grade, as they are not showing depth throughout their literary analysis. Even if they might be able to verbalize this, they must develop the skill in their writing. With WriteCoach, the program will immediately highlight a statement and prompt students to expand upon it, adding more detail and examples from the texts, and ensuring that they learn how to demonstrate their knowledge fully. Then, when they do submit their work, teachers can provide more constructive feedback on the overall strength of the piece, as WriteCoach has already supported students in polishing these specific areas of their writing.
