I worked for the YMCA while in college coaching and also working summer camp.
What occupations have you held over the years? What occupation are you in now (or before you retired)?
I became a Christian as a college freshman. As a sophomore I started working with the youth group at church and soon I was in charge of the youth. When I graduated from FTU I became a full time youth minister. This is the only real job I have ever had. I am still employed as a Youth Pastor today. I have written several youth books and spoken at many youth events, retreats, conferences, etc. I did make some money for speaking and writing, But, Youth Ministry is all I have ever really done.
Are you still working?

Running, golf, snow skiing, writing and coaching. I m currently coaching a high school boys soccer team and writing a regular column on parenting for the local newspaper.
What plans do you have for the next decade of your life?
Well I have no plans to retire and I'd like to just keep being a youth pastor. Youth these days have a hard time and I think I can help them. But, for me, it is kinda a God thing as to what I do or don't do next. But retiring is not currently on my radar.

I've traveled all over the world ( I lost count at 30 countries) mainly with my youth group kids doing missions on every continent except Australia. But it is has not always been easy. In mainland China, I preached in a church and was then questioned for two hours by a communist official (no I'm not in the CIA.) In Mozambique, myself and 3 youth, were jailed and upon release kicked out of the country and banned for life (oh well.) In Lebanon, myself and a student were kidnapped off the street in Beirut, while handing out Bibles, by Islamic terrorist. They were going to kill us (I am serious), but much later we did manage to escape before they were successful. I had promised that kid's mom I would bring him back alive, so we had to escape.

Remember the Titans - You think it is about football, but it is about so much more.

You've seen the birth of cell phones, the internet and great advances in medical science. We even remember black and white television.. A pretty remarkable life I'd say.

India Dick in study hall and her amazing Zodiac knowledge,
Linda and Sandy Simandl two sweet sisters...Uhh just friends, The time Linda asked me to pretend to take her out on a date so she could secretly meet up with her boyfriend who her dad didn't approve of... I was happy to do it.
Lori Brunkhorst my first real girlfriend and the time she convinced me to go skinny dipping by the dock one night at Kraft Azalea Gardens... That's all I'm saying,
Anne Kellam and our ride by Kraft Azalea Gardens one night... I had a PA on my CB radio and as we drove by with all the cars parked I blurted out "This is the Winter Park Police department and we are fed up with the illicit activities going on in this area and are giving everyone 5 minutes to clear the area". By the time we drove around Alabama Dr. and came back half the cars were gone. It was also memorable to have know her two sisters Elizabeth and Frances... Again all three just good friends.
Suzanne Hickman, my senior prom date and first attempt at a serious relationship, I think I failed miserably. A brilliant and dedicated human being she was heavy on my mind for many... many years. If for some reason you read this some where Suzanne, hopefully you can forgive me for our last email conversation, since you told me not to contact you again.

We have two daughters, Devon and Erin. Devon stayed local to the area and is an account manager for corporate insurance. She is a true mama to her brood of 4, two boys ages 16 and 12 and 2 girls ages 9 and 4. Our youngest, Erin, after traveling through Southeast Asia and Australia, ended up marrying an Aussie and settled in Perth. They have 2 sons, Nolan and Corbin and they all are the only reason we will take a 20 hour plane flight anywhere!
What was your first paying job after high school?
I worked for my classmate Anna Ondick's dad at the business he owned, Hi-Flavor Meats in Winter Springs. He was so sweet...he just wanted to give me some working experience. Additionally, I signed up to be a Kelly Girl and my first assignment was at T.G. Lee Dairy!
What occupations have you held over the years? What occupation are you in now (or before you retired)?
While going to SCC, I worked at Winter Park Telephone Company part-time. Subsequently, I was hired full time in 1974 and stayed in Customer Service fulfilling many positions, until I left in 1998 after 24 years. I was getting a full package with pay for a year, but ended up relaxing a total of 2 months before I started working for a Manufacturing rep firm, PRO-CO Inc. in Longwood, where I am still working after 23 years. There is an event gallery next to our firm, and in 2015, simply after volunteering to help out, I began doing tours, and working with clients to set up events. I am still working there as well, in between my full time job at PRO-CO. I guess I like to keep busy!

I also do scrapbooking, though that will be something I get more into when I finally slow down with my 2 jobs. I can always be drawn outside to do yard work..I love the feeling of everything looking very manicured. Lastly...any and everything BTS...go ARMY!
What plans do you have for the next decade of your life?
I really do hope to slow down a bit...both my jobs keep me busy on a full time schedule but I want to more personal downtime.
In what places have you lived in your life?
I lived most of my youth in Winter Park. When I got married I moved all the way out to the Goldenrod area off Aloma. From there we moved to Seminole County, outside the city limits of Longwood...to which we still call home.
Where have you traveled? Which place did you enjoy most and why?
We love the mountains and waterfall chasing, so North Carolina and Georgia. San Francisco was a favorite city but anything that gets you away from the humdrum is good...Southern California, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Canada (Niagara Falls) and of course our own Florida beaches. Since our daughter and her family live in Perth Western Australia, we have visited there over the years. We've even done little getaways to Denmark and Albany in Western Australia, which have some truly remarkable scenery. The flight over is long, but worth it in the end!!
What are some of your favorite books and movies? And why are they your favorites?
I love Nora Roberts, and have always enjoyed good old Victorian romance novels! I will watch any of the Lord of the Rings movies over and over again, and I loved Fried Green Tomatoes...Towanda!

Tell us about your children and grandchildren.
Daughter, Sarah, age 35; Granddaughter, Blake, age 7. Very proud of both of them. Sarah is a great mom, and Blake a funny, smart, athletic kid!
What was your first paying job after high school?
After many recreation type jobs, I worked in my Dad's general construction office as a sort of secretary-Girl Friday person for about two years, and then decided to go to law school.
What occupations have you held over the years? What occupation are you in now (or before you retired)?
I've been a lawyer in my own private practed for over 40 years. Started out as a law clerk in two different firms while I was in school, but it was pretty hard to get hired as a woman lawyer in a small town in 1977, so I went in half-half with another woman lawyer. She owned an IBM Selectric typewriter, and I had a hand-me-down typing table with wheels. We shared space and rolled the typewriter between our two offices. Since then I built up my firm to at one time employing two associate attorneys, two paralegals, a legal assistant, and a bookkeeper. I've now downsized to just me and one paralegal. No present retirement intentions - I still really enjoy my work.
Are you still working?
Still working
What are some of your hobbies, interests, talents and activities that you enjoy doing?
For abourt the last 20 years, I've played tennis in organized leagues here in Gaineville. Teams I've been on have been to sectional tournaments many times, although never won the tournaments. Also go to the beach (St. Augustine) frequently, I've done some international traveling and am looking forward to doing more. Also, living in Gainesville, I'm a pretty enthusiastic Gator sports fan.
What plans do you have for the next decade of your life?
Not completely sure. Have downsized my law practice, looking to downsize my home. Probably some more travel, and definitely more time with my granddaughter!
In what places have you lived in your life?
Mostly Winter Park and Gainesville, FL.
Where have you traveled? Which place did you enjoy most and why?
Trip of a lifetime - three weeks photo safari in east Africa, camping in the Seregeti, visiting Maasai homes, staying in a camp in the Taragire Park with elephants walking through in the evening. Another great trip to Paragonia - hiking on glaciers, sailing through the Straits of Magellan, the Beagle Channel, hiking up Cape Horn. Also, several trips to Europe, including a great trip on a barge down a canal in the Bordeaux region in France with seven other friends for our 60th birthday year.
What are some of your favorite books and movies? And why are they your favorites?
I find myself reading more history and politics books, listening to podcasts with similar subjects. Haven't been to a movie theater in years, but love Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, etc. - what a surfeit of entertainment.
What is your favorite quote?
Paraphrasing: If one person says it's raining, and another says it's dry, it's not the journalist's job to quote them both, but instead to look out the f'g window and find out the truth.
What are some of your favorite memories from WPHS?
Pep rallies. Working backstage at school plays, Trips to New Smyrna Beach (the first away from Orlando trip I was allowed to drive after I got my license - my parents figured I had been so many times, I wouldn't get lost). AP English, American History, Shakespeare classes. Lots of friends!

When I registered at WPHS, Mr Robertson (who was a member of our church and knew where we lived), he said I could go to WPHS ( using my Aunt's address on WP Road) but I would not be allowed to be involved in any extracurricular activities. Fine....I wanted to graduate with my friends i grew up with at WPHS.

Tell us about your children and grandchildren.
After raising two sons, I now have a precious little granddaughter, a true light in my life!!
What was your first paying job after high school?
I worked as a buyer for the Jacobson’s stores in Florida. It was an exciting job for a young girl from a small town, as I spent 10 weeks a year in NYC selecting merchandise for each season.
What occupations have you held over the years? What occupation are you in now (or before you retired)?
After my 8 years at Jacobson’s, I retired to raise my family, and then spent the next 40+ years volunteering in my community.
Are you still working?
Volunteering
In what places have you lived in your life?
I’ve always lived in Winter Park!
Where have you traveled? Which place did you enjoy most and why?
I’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to do a fair bit of traveling. One of the highlights was a trip to see the pyramids in Egypt. We were whisked in from a cruise ship in Alexandria on buses with armed guards. Not the kind of thing you forget!
What are some of your hobbies, interests, talents and activities that you enjoy doing?
No special talents, but I am an avid bridge player, and totally addicted to Words with Friends! I’m still a busy volunteer, and one of the things I enjoy the most is running a giving circle of 60 women, along with Beverly Hughes Evans.
What is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote at the moment is from Clint Eastwood on aging. When asked how he manages to stay youthful and involved, he replied, “Its simple, don’t let the Old Man in!”

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was so impactful since I was working with an Art Therapist in a locked down mental health facility at ORMC at the time and felt this movie projected all the crazy within the walls of the ward above our Occupational Therapy rooms! I moved to LA thinking I would get a masters in Art Therapy when I was offered a job in Oil & Gas paying double what AT ever would. I'm pleased that I did eventually return to my art roots and have been a teaching artist and ceramic sculptor since 1993!

My son with my wife Lynda was born in May of 1995. He is 6'4" and I have to look up to him. He is presently working in the flooring business like I did and he is doing well for just starting. I am very proud and I look up to him in many ways. I have only been married once to my present beautiful and wonderful wife Lynda. I do however have a daughter, Jennifer who I found out about approximately 10 years ago. She may even be the first child born to a 1971 wildcat? By Jennifer I have two wonderful grandchildren Esther and Micah. It's a long story but it's one I'm happy to tell anyone who is interested.

One thing I don't think I would change is my time at Winter Park High School. Great teachers, great learning experiences, great friends and great fun.
I have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure my classmates are really here with me, even after all these years. God bless each one of you.
Love from my heart to yours.

The 10-day Food System Tour of Southern Italy was pretty unique and special. I traveled with thirty (30) fellow UF IFAS specialists and food experts through southern Italy visiting olive, fruit and wine production operations. My bike trip through parts of Vermont was great fun. The headquarters was at the house featured in the Bob Newhart sitcom. The meals, wine and new friendships shared were delightful. Bicycling and camping trips to Moab were always fun. Attending a Ballet performed by Marta Beckett at the Amargosa Opera House in Death Valley Junction (old Borax Mule Team headquarters) was probably my most unique travel experience.

What plans do you have for the next decade of your life?
Continue being a life-long learner, traveling, downsizing home space. I'd still like to take dance lessons, try archery again, and maybe try skeet shooting.
What is your favorite quote?
If you are going to walk on thin ice, you may as well dance.
What are some of your favorite memories from WPHS?
I had a particular fondness for the summer Americanism vs Communism class; and much enjoyed Art Class designing a model house and batik dyeing. I found learning French from a young teacher with a heavy southern accent a challenge. I have good memories of many parties and beach trips, riding with Linda Crisler and friends to NSB listening to Cream, and driving around with others through the McDonalds parking lot and various other places along 17-92. One such evening resulted in a car mishap at Lake Lilly with several of us in a car (I wasn't the driver) and a head on collison (at slow speed; not my fault) in front of Big Boys restaurant. Many of my high school memories are associated with Edgewater since I attended 10th grade there, and went "steady" with a guy from Edgewater during my senior year at WPHS which doubled my prom and winter formal fun.

Met at 15 & 19, have been together 21 years, married for 12. Son James is a B767 pilot for Omni airlines, mostly international, recently married to Andrea, a hospital nutritionist (and great cook!!), moved to Salt Lake City this summer, both love to go "adventuring" with our two Husky grandchildren.
What was your first paying job after high school?

What are some of your hobbies, interests, talents and activities that you enjoy doing?
Love any and all time outdoors, hiking, gardening, Blue Zone project, art.
What plans do you have for the next decade of your life?
More travel, would like to live in other countries for 4-6 months at a time (Germany, France, Ireland) We split our time between NC mountains (near Brevard) and Woodstock, GA, love having people come and visit, in the process of becoming even more involved in our county there, helping it grow in a healthy way, especially involvement in Blue Zone Project. Major landscape plan growing in my little brain... hmmm.... Staying Healthy!
In what places have you lived in your life?
Born in Germany, 4 cities in FL, Tacoma, Seattle, Arizona, New Mexico,
NC (Charlotte, Little Switzerland, Boone/Blowing Rock, Pisgah Forest), Atlanta and Woodstock GA
Where have you traveled? Which place did you enjoy most and why?
Spent 2 years in my 30's traveling in a motorhome - have been in all 50 states, most of the provinces in Canada (minus Newfoundland and Quebec); Mexico...
London; Germany (Stuttgart, Munich, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg, Nuremburg); France (Paris, Mont St Michel, Giverny, many towns across Normandie); Spain (Madrid, Granada, Sevilla), Ireland (most time spent there), Italy (Milan, Lake Como, Tuscany) Australia (Sydney), Santiago Chile. Love Germany, France, and Ireland the most - all places where we have been away from the larger cities.. the people are so curious and polite and helpful - and Lake Como for its quiet beauty... Actually, love our country the most, the size, and so much spectacular geological variety.
What are some of your favorite books and movies? And why are they your favorites?
Richard Russo's books (all of them) and movie "Nobody's Fool" - great cast, sweet, poignant story... More recent (well not very) movie "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" - Don't know how I missed it in 2011, Tom Hanks and rest of cast superb, especially the young boy who plays a leading role about 9-11 - heart wrenching and funny... Funny and light: "The Holiday" - watch it every year to see Jude Law.
Jodi Picoult books, presents difficult moral/ethical scenarios, they make you closely examine what you think... "Storyteller" probably favorite. "The Pearl that Lost its Shell" by Nadia Hashimi about women in Afghanistan - unusual story and makes you question your own opinions...
What is your favorite quote?
When you allow someone to help you, you actually give them a gift. We all need to feel that we are able to help, that we are needed.
What are some of your favorite memories from WPHS?
So many... by the time I came to WPHS, it was my 11th school in 10 years. What I remember most is finally feeling that I had a home; that sense of security remained even on those normal days that didn't go well. Like many teenagers, I didn't exactly feel like I fit in, but that was ok. Marilyn Hamilton debating Mr. Johnson in American History (who knows why). A crush on... oops, not telling. Pep Club. Orchesis. Morning carpool to school... Taking longer routes to the next class so I would pass... oops, not telling. Edgewater vs WPHS (was that in the rain?) Think we won? (I was sick from screaming.)

What occupations have you held over the years? What occupation are you in now (or before you retired)?
After graduating from Syracuse, I moved to Atlanta where I got a job at Sears in their Management Training program and they moved me back to Florida. After my training, I was promoted to Chicago, where I worked in the Sears Tower in catalog marketing and buying. After 6 years in Chicago, I realized there had to be a better place to live, so I moved to Colorado with my boyfriend at the time. In Colorado, I worked as a buyer for a chain of retail stores and then in leadership for Saks Fifth Avenue. I stopped working to raise my kids and then went back to work in Human Resources for Whole Foods Market for 14 years. I just retired in December 2019.
Are you still working?

What are some of your hobbies, interests, talents and activities that you enjoy doing?
I am really into exercise now that I have more free time. I walk with my neighbors about 4 miles 6 days a week and take classes. Colorado is a great place to get outside, so I go to the mountains whenever I can and hike and enjoy the outdoors. I love to cook, read and enjoy the company of friends and family. Life is good.

My father was in the Army so we lived all over the world before we moved to Maitland. Since then I have lived in New York, Chicago, and Colorado for almost 40 years.
Where have you traveled? Which place did you enjoy most and why?
I love to travel and can't wait for things to return to normal. Luckily, I have had the opportunity to visit about 45 of our 50 states. As an adult I have been to Canada, The Bahamas, Mexico, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Guatemala, Belize, and Sicily.
What are some of your favorite memories from WPHS?
Most of my memories are from Sophomore year at the old school. I had 3 older siblings that went there and they raved about the Cuban sandwiches in the lunchroom and that they sold MILKSHAKES!!. That school had so much personality. The new school was nice, but how crazy was it that they had to put a chain link fence around it to keep out drugs.

What are some of your favorite memories from WPHS?
I was the new kid who came to WP in my junior year, so I don't have a lot of favorite memories on campus. Mr. Creech's PAD class was definitely a highlight...and Mr. Hatcher's Biology. I vividly remember the day they posted the Senior Test scores and I realized I did well and could get into UF. That was a great moment! My favorite memories of 1971 would be hanging out with my best friend Betty Franz, going to the beach all the time. We were run off I-4 into a retention basin in my mom's car on the way to the beach on Senior Skip Day. Boy did I get in trouble!

Write a special message to your WPHS '71 classmates.
Hey fellow Wildcats. You probably don't remember me. I wasn't very involved in school life at WPHS. I thought it was all kind of silly back then. Maybe I would do high school differently if I had the chance to go back and do it over. I wish everyone well.
