The goal of the workshop is to surface ethical, practical, methodological, personal, and philosophical tensions in the WoZ method. Though a collaborative session, we seek to develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be a wizard through eliciting first-person experiences of researchers. Such experiences may include descriptions of what the praxis of the method is, what feelings arise, what characters are played, what contexts need to be taken in consideration, what are the audiences or users, and what levels of deception are acceptable. We suggest that an interdisciplinary workgroup is necessary to unpack the method and articulating future practices of WoZ, and making sure the wizards themselves are being considered in the planning and execution of the method
We will bring together researchers and professionals of those interested in the method - be it in resistance or in defence of it - to foster the community, exchange ideas and stimulate collaborations.
We will form a renewed understanding of the method by highlighting the person behind the wizard.
Together we will create guidelines for using and reporting WoZ studies.
We will facilitate a shared folder where interviews and the bill of rights will be collected.
As a result of the workshop, we plan to formulate an article on the tensions of WoZ.
