2) Ongoing projects

Improving quantitative development assessment

We are improving the assessment of sustainability and industrial path viability to inform industrial development decision support systems. We will soon be recruiting additional students to support this research direction.

Investigating development at the sub-national level

We are evaluating sub-national development to understand how to address regional inequalities in ways that optimally build towards national objectives. We will soon be recruiting additional students to support this research direction.

Industry-specific development analysis

In collaboration with the Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST) and the Department of Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University, we are investigating the potential for localizing wind value chain components in South Africa.

Uncovering barriers to innovation adoption

In collaboration with colleagues at UBC, I am investigating the barriers hampering the adoption of innovations within the building industry in Canada.

Circularity

We are investigating how circularity can be improved by redefining how residual value is assessed.

3) Collaborations

UNIDO (Austria)

From 2019 to 2022, I worked with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to extend their Industrial Analytics Platform to incorporate some of the elements from our economic complexity-based research. Check out the competitive industries tool that we supported them in developing: https://iap.unido.org/data/competitive-industries

KU Leuven (Belgium)

I work closely with researchers from KU Leuven's Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) on location decisions of firms, industrial policy with a focus on global value chains, and international trade. This ties in with our research on quantitative and qualitative decision support for industrial development.

Stellenbosch University (South Africa)

I am co-supervising students with academics from Stellenbosch University's Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST) and Department of Industrial Engineering. The studies focus on the themes of circularity and wind turbine localisation in South Africa.
