Scribel City is a frontier city in the Scribel Region. It is the headquarters of the Adventurer's Guild and the site of an Otherworld Gate that connects to other worlds.
It is unclear when Scribel City was first founded, and its age is unknown. Despite the fact that the Otherworld Gate was opened only a few years ago, the Scribel City Prison is reported to be quite old.
The area surrounding Scribel City is generally underdeveloped, and the bridge across the Scribel River was only recently completed. The people of Scribel City generally have a poor understanding of the surrounding geography and nations, which suggests that the current inhabitants of Scribel City have not been in the area for very long. Some foreigners encountered on the road have never heard of Scribel City, which indicates that the city was either recently established or has a weak influence on the continent. Scribel City is presumably relatively small.
A road linking Scribel City with Asteria Village in the west suggests that the city may have had some prior contact with western civilizations.
Scribel City has a government similar to a city-state. It is known to have a City Council that determines various affairs. The Adventurer's Guild is tightly involved with the government of Scribel City. In particular, the guild manages tax collection, public works, protection against monsters, and is known to negotiate diplomacy on behalf of the city.
Scribel City lacks a standing military. While there is a City Guard, security is supplemented with adventurers from the Adventurer's Guild.
Many government agencies in the city are notorious for being chronically understaffed and underpaid.
Scribel City is a walled city situated near the Scribel River and the North Scribel Forest. There is at least one gate in each cardinal direction, and the gates are monitored by city guardsmen.
Several districts have been reported inside the city:
Market district
Craftsmen district
Residential district
Noble district
Red light district
Scribel City is also notable for the presence of:
Adventurer's Guild Headquarters
Adventurer's Guild Tavern
The Otherworld Gate
City Guard Barracks
The Sewers
At least one temple
At least one orphanage
Scribel City seems to be predominantly human, but it is also quite diverse. Many adventurers and Otherworlders are non-human. The Guildmaster for the Adventurer's Guild is a faun, and the bartender in the Adventurer's Guild Tavern is an orc.
Most individuals in Scribel City are presumably relatively weak, and the economic status of most individuals is fairly poor. The market in Scribel City is notable for selling poor quality goods, which perhaps reflects upon a relatively poor population. That said, "nobles" and other wealthy individuals have been mentioned in some quest reports.
Scribel City has a high number of orphans and disabled veterans, due to an excess number of adventurers and a high mortality rate. There is also substantial gang activity and reports of cultists.
There is an overwhelming number of slimes found in, near, and underneath Scribel City, although presumably they are not counted as part of the demographic census.
It is unclear what formulates the basis of Scribel City's economy. Scribel City has an excess of slimes (and slime cores) and healing herbs. A recent trade agreement with Gelderholm was established based on the export of healing herbs. It can be presumed that healing potions and other apothecary activities are one of the city's economic specialties.
Farming and adventuring are other self-evident features of Scribel City's economy.
The currency of Scribel City is the "G". It is disputed whether "G" stands for "gold" or for something more generic like "Guild Currency".
Scribel City seems to have a diverse culture thanks to the influx of many Otherworlders. One of the major temples in the city welcomes an enormous variety of religious faiths. The city appears to be relatively tolerant of various ethnicities, species, and races.
The city's moral alignment appears to lean "good" — as evidenced by a reasonable rule of law, support for charitable activities, and various quests that emphasize some amount of justice. Nonetheless, the diversity of the city's population also means that less savory individuals are also prevalent.
The technology level of Scribel City is mostly primitive/medieval. For reference, it is difficult to find a toothbrush to purchase in the city. There is a lack of steel weapons in the city market, which suggests that the local blacksmiths are not particularly good.
