Project "Think GREEN - work STEAM" summary
The importance of environmental education from early school age has been increased in connection with climate changes nowadays. That's why two educational institutions from Lithuania and Estonia (Siauliai "Romuvos" Progymnasium from Lithuania and Haabersti Vene Gumnaasium from Estonia) have joined to create the project "Think Green- Work STEAM" with the aim: to develop at our pupils a non-consumerist attitude towards nature, to teach them to respect natural surroundings and be responsible in their life for greener future.
The participating schools are going to apply a new aproach to environmental education using the efficient and relevant for pupils method- Learning by doing. In this project will be organised learning activities and 2 mutual mobilities "Class exchange" for 11-13 year pupils (Grade 5). Innovative STEAM activities will help pupils feel connected to environmental topics, even if the issues they are studying are happening far away from home. It’s also a great way to help them imagine the world they want to live in. Due to project activities in STEAM-related subjects the participating pupils will develop their green qualities by changing the value system, protecting nature, changing attitudes towards the environment around us. The project activity plan has been worked out to encourage pupils to do environmental investigations into recycling, pollution, conservation, and energy through hands-on activities.
Pupils’ activities will be multifaceted and they are willing to get involved in the project. Pupils’ activities:
1. Photograph;
2. Research;
3. Measure;
4. Describe the activities;
5. Notice the differences in nature;
6. Work in groups and pairs;
7. Share the experience with pupils from another country;
8. Develop critical thinking (ask questions, goals, hypotheses, conclude).
The whole school community, teachers and colleagues will be involved in the process.
Environmental protection will intertwine STEAM-related subjects and History, Language,
PE lessons. Teachers are always willing to take part in project activities to increase pupils' awareness of nature.
