The University of Travancore, which eventually became the University of Kerala, was established in 1937 by a promulgation of the Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balaramavarma who was the first Chancellor of the University, with the motto “Karmani Vyagyate Prajna- Knowledge realizing itself is Action”. In 1957, the Kerala University Act 14 was brought into force and the University of Travancore was renamed as University of Kerala. Shri. C. P. Ramaswamy Ayyer, the then Diwan of the State was the first Vice Chancellor. The University has 42 departments of teaching and research under 16 faculties. The School of Distance Education, Administrative offices and a few Teaching Departments are located at the Senate House Campus in the City, while most of the other teaching and research departments are located at the Kariavattom Campus which is 13 km away from the city centre. The University of Kerala Study and Research Centre (UKSRC) Alappuzha is established by the University of Kerala in 2020. This is the approved research centre for pursuing Doctoral Degree in Commerce discipline under the University of Kerala. The centre is also offering a Master Degree in Commerce discipline with Rural Management as specialisation. It is considered as the extension of the Department of Commerce at Kariavattom Campus, University of Kerala. The center is also housing the university information center, district reference library with e-journals and e-books, university cash counter, video conferencing and internet browsing facility for students etc.
The Department of Commerce was established in 1985 as a Teaching and Research Department of the University of Kerala. Within a span of 37 years, we were able to establish ourselves as a Centre of Excellence with a focus on Education, Research, Consultancy, and Extension services. The Department has completed various milestones in its academic endeavor making it unique of its kind. The Department has completed 12 Major Research Projects with a funding of over 40 lakhs, three Consultancy projects for the industry with a funding of around 4 lakhs, three Collaborative Programmes and many International Conferences and Workshops as well as Lecture Series on topics of contemporary relevance .
