Four airports - Dortmund, Münster/Osnabrück, Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf - are within a reasonable distance of the Ruhr University. Düsseldorf Airport, however, is not only the largest, but also the most easily accessed: there are direct connections between the airport and Bochum’s main train station up to eight times per hour, and the journey only takes a good half an hour.
Getting from Düsseldorf Airport to Bochum Hauptbahnhof
Upon arriving at the airport follow the signs to the DB (Deutsche Bahn) train station. Buy your train ticket to Bochum (Ticket needed: Preisstufe C, €18,90) at the airport before boarding the monorail which takes you to the train station. There are trains travelling directly to Bochum Hauptbahnhof frequently and the trip takes about 35 to 45 minutes depending on which train you take. The ticket Preisstufe C is a ticket provided by the public transportation system VRR and it is only valid in regional trains (RE1, 6 or 11) and S-Bahn, whichever one you take. If you take an ICE, IC or EC, you need a ticket specifically for one of these long-distant trains and it is only valid on the one you chose before. Depending on the time you're traveling it can be cheaper or more expensive than the VRR-ticket.
Getting from Dortmund Airport to Bochum Hauptbahnhof
Take the shuttle bus from the Airport Terminal to Holzwickede train station. From Holzwickede you take the train to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof (central station) and then change trains to Bochum Hauptbahnhof.
By train
Bochum Hauptbahnhof (central station) is served by ICE, IC, EC, regional and suburban trains at a high frequency. Take a look at this website for a suitable connection.
From there, you can reach us easily by taking the underground line U35 straight to the Ruhr University, which has its own station named after it. The U35 (direction Bochum Hustadt/Querenburg) runs at five-minute intervals on weekdays and takes ten minutes to get to the university. Notice that you should get off at the station "Gesundheitscampus", one station before "Ruhr-Universität". If you missed it, just get off at "Ruhr-Universität", the walk over the campus is just longer (ca. 15 mins).
Getting from the U-Bahn station "Gesundheitscampus" to the venue:
Go towards the exit "Max-Imdahl-Straße" and turn to the right at the bottom of the stairs. Pass the roundabout by keep walking straight. From there you basically just follow the road leading you straight to university (you walk over a little bridge, then pass a parking garage on your right until you end up in front of the building GD). See the Google maps screenshot on the left.
Getting from the U-Bahn station "Ruhr-Universität" to the venue:
From the train station of the U-35 ("Ruhr-Universität", the "U" at the top of the Campusplan), turn right on the pedestrian bridge and walk towards the university. Your route takes you directly to the building of the university library ("UB" on the Campusplan). Keep on the right of the library and go down the stairs. Then turn right and walk down the lawns in front of building GA and GB. For GD just continue walking past the construction site.
For the speakers there will be rooms booked in the hotel B&B Bochum HBF Süd, (Universitätsstr.3, 44789 Bochum), which is located directly behind Bochum central train station (please note that there are two B&B hotels at the station, which can be a bit confusing, but here the one at the back of the station is meant, not the one next to the main entrance at the front, which is called B&B Bochum HBF Nord).
For the other participants and discussants also the Kolpinghaus and the Art Hotel Tucholsky can be recommended. For a wider selection of hotels, see Bochum Tourismus hotels. AirBnb is, of course, also an option in Bochum.
