Each session equips participants with practical skills, techniques and approaches to apply immediately. Participants also reflect on the ways in which they regularly communicate and consider a range of particular linguistic tools to use to their advantage.
Session 1 - How does the notion of culture help us to communicate in diverse, multilingual settings? What are critical incidents, and can they help us to improve how we communicate?
Session 2 - Top communication strategies - what works and what might we want to include more frequently in our everyday communication?
Session 3 - Small Talk in work contexts - what is its function and how do we do it?
Session 4 - The Grammar of Politeness - The relationship between grammar and levels of formality in English. How can we maintain politeness in our social interactions?
Session 5 - Personal Branding - How to craft and use personal branding statements which can be used in interviews, in CV’s and at networking events when job searching.
My teaching is trauma-informed. This is because many seekers of sanctuary are affected by trauma in a number of ways such as trouble sleeping, difficulties with cognitive processing, memory impairment and high anxiety. Trauma, consequently, significantly impacts the learning of new skills and linguistic items.
I use a variety of approaches in all workshops to ease symptoms of trauma such as developing positive goal setting behaviour, positive self-identity and self-worth, empathy building, brain building, creating a safe space, emotional regulation, being empowered and teaching in a culturally competent way. These approaches are central to all workshops. I teach a range of evidence-based, effective communication strategies and during the sessions, wellbeing tools are included to help ground and relax participants and help them focus better.
