To involve the community in a fun weekend event whilst trying to examine the route down to an ancient ford, so as to understand its development and ongoing use to access the village of Woodford Halse.Â
Did the trackway just evolve naturally or was it constructed?
Has the ford been in a different position historically?
What type of traffic used the trackway?
Desk-based research and field survey planning stared in January 2025, and metal detecting of adjacent fields took place from March to May, during which the site was selected and excavation happened and was completed in May of the same year. From June to September, finds were cleaned, identified, categorised and photographed. This website came into being and presentations were prepared.
We expected to find a wide range of items, especially metal ones with the early metal detector surveys. These items were then planned to be collected, cleaned, identified and presented and documented for people to witness.
