Featured Carver - Shannon Finch
Featured Carver - Shannon Finch
Northwest Carving Association is proud to announce Shannon Finch as our Featured Carver for our 45th Annual Artistry in Wood Show.
Interested in creating art since she was a child, Shannon began a serious study of wood carving more than twenty years ago to express herself in that medium and explore her heritage and spiritual inklings more deeply. Shannon has come far since then and acknowledges a debt to carving masters Joe McConnell, Jim Ploegman Sr., and Cecily Bishop. All three master carvers have been Featured Artists in past NWCA shows.
She has been the recipient of numerous accolades at woodworking shows and in 2016, after winning a Best of Division Award at the Advanced level for the fourth time, attained the right to call herself an “Expert Wood Carver”.
Shannon specializes in carving Coastal Northwest style masks, plaques, rattles, and figurines. She is currently shaping a commissioned 21’ totem pole out of red cedar and teaching classes at the Master’s Carving School located in Renton, WA.
Shannon will be showing many of her pieces along with the skills of several of her students. Come by and admire her art, get a few tips and even observe some of her students working on their current projects.

Art of Woodcarving with Cecily Bishop
Master Carver and past NWCA Featured Carver, Cecily teaches beginner and experienced woodcarvers alike. In Cecily's classes, she focuses on tools, wood selection, and carving techniques, Form Line design, and three-dimensional carving. Morning and evening class details can be found here.

Paul has exhibited in several local galleries and is known for his artistic wood carvings, paintings and burnings. For the show, he'll be demonstrating wood burning. Come by and see what he has cooking ... umm I mean burning.

Northwest Carving Association and all of our members are honored to have carved with James. He was a graphic artist, a master woodcarver and a pyrography artist. We were privileged to have known him. James won many awards including multiple Grand Championships at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup.

Celebration of Life: Joe McConnell
For over 30 years, Joe McConnell contributed to wood carving in the Puget Sound area through his carvings, his teachings and his contributions to NWCA.
Joe found joy in passing his knowledge and skills to his students at his studio, Beaver Lake Woodwork. Many of his students stayed with him for over 20 years - a testament to his generosity and to the wood carving community he helped build.
While we will all miss Joe's quick wit and encouragement, we will continue to see his fingerprints through his influence on hundreds of local carvers through their current and future works. NWCA had the pleasure of honoring Joe twice as our feature carver including at our show in 2025.
