Diabetes in Women

More than 34 million people in the United States have diabetes

The complications from diabetes are similar in men and women: diabetic ketoacidosis (caused by very high blood sugar), eye problems, kidney problems, poor circulation

Differences in Women

-Increased risk of depression

-Increased risk for eating disorders

-Decreased sex drive in women with diabetes

-Women who have never had diabetes can develop gestational diabetes, or diabetes during pregnancy, that can cause problems for both mom and baby

-Women with diabetes have an increased risk for urinary tract infections


Treatments

-Diet and exercise control can decrease the effects of diabetes and can even eliminate the need for medications in diabetes

-Blood sugar monitoring through a finger-stick blood sugar

-If blood sugar is not able to be controlled with diet and exercise, medications and insulin can be used to control blood sugar
