Pizza with invited guest Laura Morrison, Council Member for the City of Austin. This event was cosponsored by Women in Natural Sciences (WINS).
Laura Morrison told us about her career trajectory, which, following completion of her Master's degree in Mathematics, includes working as an engineer at Lockheed Martin, working as an export consultant and, currently, a second term in the Austin city council. Her experiences suggested to me that her technical way of thinking has led her to contribute in special and very effective ways to local politics. The work has been very exciting for her because of the wide variety of projects that she gets drawn to. As for career exploration advise, she suggests getting seriously involved in things that you care about and opportunities may naturally flow out of that involvement for you as they have for her.
Here's the information about the event that Dr. DeWitt invited us to, a fundraiser for a great cause! She paid for 9 extra tickets that you can claim by just giving her name at the entrance. Event info: http://www.planctx.org/
Thanks again to Prof. Elaine Li for arranging for Mrs. Morrison to come talk to us; to Elizabeth Morgan for helping us to invite undergraduates in WiNS and providing pizza for the event; and to Lisa Gentry for arranging the Kodosky room down to the details for this and every WiP event. Organized by Cynthia, Shirin, and Kristy.

Kodosky Room
Dr. Reichl presented the new College of Natural Sciences child birth guidelines as well as other topics important to women in the department. Dr. Reichl and I thought that it was important for students to address questions such as if one of them has a baby while in graduate school, will she get to keep her health insurance coverage? Will she be subject to the 14 semester rule? Will she get any paid leave? Since this was the only Women in Physics event of the semester, it was also a great opportunity for all the women in the department to meet. Dr. Markert was unable to attend but every other female faculty member attended. This display of encouragement and support from them as well as from the chairman’s office sparked the creation of the Women in Physics at UT Austin web page.
We offered Sandwiches from Jason's Deli and cookies. Dr. Reichl was presented with a certificate of appreciation for all her work in developing the child birth guidelines and for all the work she does to promote the success of the women in the Physics department and in the College of Natural Sciences.
UT Women in Physics Ice Cream Social [PHOTOS]
RLM 11.204
This event provided a great opportunity for the women in the department to meet each other and for the ones who already knew each other to catch up. About 10 students attended in addition to Dr. Cecile DeWitt and Dr. Sonia Paban. Dr. DeWitt entertained us with stories about her experiences as a woman in Physics and she shared much appreciated advice. Department funding was used to buy everything to make a banana split or sundae.
