Brandon is a diverse and thriving town located where vast tracts of National Forest meet the rich farmland of the Champlain Valley. Like many Vermont downtowns, Brandon was located to take advantage of the water power of the Neshobe River to power early sawmills and grist mills. More recently, the town completed a major project to create an attractive, walkable downtown and to manage the more frequent flood events of our changing climate. More info at https://brandon.org/
Once nearly treeless from supplying fuel to nearby iron furnaces, Brandon today is roughly 85% forested. Still, forest fragmentation along the Route 7 corridor threatens habitat connectivity. Moose and bear seen in our Wild Forest are most likely transients moving from one side of Route 7 to the other.
Wolf Tree Forest lies to the southeast of Brandon Village; close enough to hear the church bells (or fireworks) but far enough for bobcats to feel at home.
