This is argubaly the hardest quest in MH3G. You only need to deal with one Brachydios in Volcano – with insanely high health and damage – something common in those challenging quests back then but no longer in the modern era.
Being one of Brute Wyverns that will not lose balance when enraged, the boxer Brachydios is designed to be a very balanced monster without obvious weaknesses. In this download quest specifically, Brachydios is almost always enraged, apart from being fatigued one or twice during the maximum possible 50 minutes. And as you know, the enraged Brachydios is no joke. I remember that when I was a new hunter in MH3G, I was so scared of the enraged Brachydios, so that
When it was calm or fatigued, I fought;
When it was enraged, I ran around without attacking ;p.
Though this quest is extremely hard, veteran hunters can still challenge themselves in even crazier ways and get good results. For example,
Clearing within 5 minutes with a team of 4;
Solo clearing with X minutes;
Solo clearing without any armours;
Solo clearing with all weapons.
Some elder players in my hometown did insane challenges with this quest at that time, including one that cleared with all 12 weapons available in MH3G. I disliked him as a man (because of his personality), but respected what he achieved in an honest way. That was something I obviously could not handle back then, but deeply desired to attempt in the future – which I not only tried eventually, but also got successful. However, as a teenager, I still managed to clear it once by myself with Sword and Shield.
Weapon: Lucent Nargacuga Sword and Shield (七星剣「禄存」)
Skills: Challenger +2 / Fortify / Rock Steady / Attack Up (Medium)
With an unoptimised charm, that was the build I could achieve. And although I spent much longer time using Long Sword, the relatively lower tolerance and survivability forced me to switch to something safer – Sword and Shield was the answer.
In 2015 September, I made it once. If my memory is correct (not sure), that was actually my first ever attempt – in a serious way. Sometimes, not knowing the true scariness is one reason of being actively brave. No signs of being capturable at all till the very end – had to set the trap anyway – somehow did it, phew!
In the middle of 2024, after moving my old data that I had not touched for a while from my 3DS to my PC, and I thought it was the time to go back to face those challenging quests. For this quest, I aimed to solo clear it with 12 possible weapons. These are the steps:
Weapon by weapon. Decide the order of attempting in a wise way.
For each weapon, look for the optimal build and strategy.
Practice the normal quest of one Brachydios in Volcano, until a decent time.
Let the real fight begin, and succeed.
The final results are listed below:
Order / Weapon / Normal (Kill) / Jojo (Capture) / No. of Attempts
1 / Sword and Shield / 11:08 / 49:34 / 7th
2 / Switch Axe / 10:08 / 49:22 / 2nd
3 / Light Bowgun / 11:51 / 43:13 / 2nd
4 / Gunlance / 10:19 / 43:09 / 1st
5 / Long Sword / 11:02 / 43:58 / 1st
6 / Bow / 9:36 / 48:12 / 1st
7 / Hammer / 9:21 / 41:08 / 1st
8 / Lance / 11:14 / 49:26 / 1st
9 / Dual Blades / 10:24 / 47:24 / 1st
10 / Great Sword / 10:24 / 39:32 / 1st
11 / Heavy Bowgun / 9:11 / 44:40 / 2nd
12 / Hunting Horn / 11:05 / 45:23 / 1st
That is it! Jojo Brachydios all weapons conquered! Finally, I reached the point where that elder hunter did 10 years ago. Talking about the best clearing times (top 3):
Normal (Kill): Heavy Bowgun (9:11) / Hammer (9:21) / Bow (9:36)
Jojo (Capture): Great Sword (39:32) / Hammer (41:08) / Gunlance (43:09)
Great Sword was absolutely not the fastest, but also the smoothest – though I am a hunter with terrible skills in Great Sword till this day! Lance and Hunting Horn gave me the most headache back then, with different reasons to be seen in their corresponding pages.
MH3G was where my whole Monster Hunter journey began, so it was only appropriate that I took a great challenge like this at the end. Thank you MH3G! Well done to myself!
