Just like anything worth your time, being in the WL Color Guard takes effort. However, we have a spot for ALL students, regardless of your current level. Remember no one knows how to do anything when they first start with us. Our program is designed to teach you from the very beginning and foster a sense of enjoyment during the learning process.
Color Guard has two separate seasons. All practices are outside the school day. The fall Color guard performs with the marching band program from August until early November. The winter guard season competes indoors to pre=recorded music from December until late March.
Nope- there is no commitment to do both if you sign up for one. We have plenty of people who participate in just the fall or just the winter.
Yes! We encourage you to participate in a variety of activities. No matter what activities you pursue, it is up to you to keep an accurate schedule and iron out any conflicts. Your coaches are willing to work with you. With a little give and take, most things work out just fine.
Yes! Many current and former members participate in multiple fine arts activities.
YES!! College admissions officers are well aware of the hard work and dedication required to succeed as a color guard member. Your participation in guard will greatly enhance your college applications. Many colleges have a color guard and it can be a distinguishing factor in your application.
The guard travels with the marching band to competitions in the fall. In the winter, there is the opportunity to do an overnight trip for a WGI regional to see teams from across the country compete.
Fall Season: 2-3 hour practice 3x a week, football games, and approximately 3 Saturday competitions.
Winter Season: 2-3 hour practices 3x a week, Saturday practices as needed, and approximately 5 Saturday competitions.
We love when our parents get involved! This can look like chaperoning competitions, organizing fundraisers, liaisoning with boosters, photography/videography, and more!
Yes- like most other activities there are Activity Fees for both seasons. This money allows us to buy your equipment and uniforms for the season, pay for our team's registration and competition fees, and a whole lot more. You are also responsible for paying for your gloves, shows, and jacket- however, this is only a first year purchase. Additionally, there may be other small miscellaneous items you will be required to purchase depending on the season and show. Don't let this deter you from joining though- we have scholarships available! You also have the opportunity to participate in fundraising activities to bring down the cost of your dues.
Yes! W-L requires all Color Guard participants to submit a physical AND athletic participation agreement through this portal
