Research opportunities are available in the Climate Research Lab for interested students. Please see more information below for undergraduate and graduate students.
The Climate Research Lab (CRL) is recruiting a M.S.-level graduate assistant to start August 2026. The student will support a current National Science Foundation CAREER grant examining the atmospheric and energetic conditions leading to rapid snowmelt and rain-on-snow in the mid-latitudes, and will incorporate analysis of both observational and numerical model outputs. The assistantship includes a 9-month academic year stipend with tuition, plus a 3-month summer stipend and dedicated conference travel funds. To be considered, students should have a B.S. degree in the atmospheric, environmental, or geographic sciences, or a closely related discipline, by the start date. Proficiency in computer programming (e.g., Python, FORTRAN, NCL) is necessary and any experience in application to winter weather is welcome.
To be considered for the assistantship and learn about the application process, please contact Dr. Suriano via email. Domestic students are particularly encouraged to inquire. Formal application deadline to WKU EEAS graduate programs is in early 2026.
At this time, the period to apply for an undergraduate research assistant position in the CRL for AY 25-26 has closed. General information for undergraduate students is available below. Grant-funded research assistantships are anticipated to be available next academic year in the CRL (2026-2027). Inquire for more information.
If you are interested in an undergraduate research position in the lab, please email Dr. Suriano to find a time to discuss your interests and how they overlap with the research foci in the CRL. Previous research experience is not necessary. There are opportunities to receive funding for a project (FUSE), or course credit if desired.
If you are interested in majoring in Meteorology or ESGS, Dr. Suriano is happy to discuss opportunities within these programs with you or put you in touch with the program directors. Further information about Dr. Suriano's teaching.
If you are interested in pursuing a Masters degree in Geoscience at WKU, please contact Dr. Suriano via email to discuss how your interests may overlap, and the logistics of applying to the program. Graduate students who work with Dr. Suriano are expected to conduct original research and complete a thesis.
