I'm really happy you chose to give band a try. It is my goal to make class as fun as possible and to teach you as much as possible about music and your instrument. I'm sure that you have a ton of questions, and your parents have a ton of questions, and there are a ton of questions you didn't even know you had so I'll try to answer them here.
If you want to be a part of the Walker Junior Wildcat Band one of the first things you'll need to do is figure out what instrument you'll want to play. For that we have instrument Fittings!
In an Instrument Fitting you will come by the band room and I'll show you quickly how to play a few different instruments and we will see what you are naturally suited for!
Instrument Fittings are available on the following dates:
May 28/29/30
June 11/12/13
You can sign up for an Instrument Fitting by clicking this link!
If you can't make those dates/times, just send me an email at robert.perez@lpsb.org to set up an appointment.
Remember, you don't need to know how to play an instrument or read any music.
Almost none of my beginners know how to play an instrument or read music when they start band.
Well that is an easy one. Band is fun. It is an escape. So many of my students end up loving the band room, it becomes a safe place for them because band isn't a class where you sit down and take notes. It is a class where you learn to express yourself through making music. There will be weird sounds and funny words and shouting and whispering and drama, all from an instrument.
Parents, if you want to know some of the facts and stats about how band will positively affect your child's development click here.
Perfect! Almost none of my beginners know how to play an instrument, it is part of my job to teach you how. We will teach you everything you need to know in class.
That is fine too! The first couple of weeks of school we work on learning how to read music. You will be really good at it by the end of the year, you'll be able to read music almost as fast as you can read books (or faster!)
That is totally fine right now. Most people don't own an instrument when they decide to join band.....because they don't even know what instrument they're going to play yet. Once the school year gets cooking and I know what everyone is going to play, I will give you something to take home that has a lot of information on the who/what/when/where/how/why of whatever materials you need to be successful in band.
I have never had a student who I didn't let in band because they couldn't afford it. Just send me an email and we can see if we can work something out. If you truly want to be in band, I will do whatever I can to make that happen.
Well....I don't know yet. That is something that we find out together. I will test you out on all of the instruments and see which one you're naturally better at. I know, I know, you don't know how to play them so you'll be terrible at all of them. That is very possible, but that is okay! Everyone is usually better at something just because of the shape of their lips, cheeks, mouth, etc. We will figure it out together. The most important thing to remember is to pick the instrument that you're best at. Your band life will be so much better if you pick something that you're good at and not what you're friend is doing or what seems cool. And don't believe the haters, there are no boy or girl instruments, just instruments.
The instruments that we start beginners on are: Flute / Clarinet / Trumpet / Trombone / Tuba / Percussion
If you want to find out some cool stuff about the instruments, click here!
Nope! The beginner band does 2 concerts a year after school, one in December and one in May. That is it. No after school practices that you have to get a ride to or from (unless you want some extra help but that is another story). I try to make band as easy as possible to be a part of.
YUUUUP! Beginning band doesn't conflict with anything so you're free to do as you please.
