In agility class, you will learn how to guide your dog through a course of obstacles like jumps, tunnels, weave poles, teeter totters, ramps, and A-frames. We focus on building your dog's confidence and responsiveness to your commands while navigating the obstacles in a coordinated manner, working together to complete the course efficiently and accurately. Beginner agility classes start with familiarizing your dog with the equipment and then gradually progressing to the advanced agility classes, where you will learn more complex sequences as your and your pet’s skills are developed. You will be instructed on how to use body language, hand signals, and verbal cues to help direct your dog through the course. We emphasize positive reinforcement through praise and treats to reward your dog’s correct behavior. Courses also provide opportunities to prepare for Novice and ACT (Agility Course Testing). This training is energetic, fun, and one of the best ways to bond, communicate and build trust with your pet. Agility training is for dogs that are 6 months and older and have completed a beginners’ obedience session and for handlers who are able to physically navigate courses with their dog. Our club hosts two agility trials per year.
Dog agility is a sport where you direct your dog through a pre-set obstacle course within a certain time limit. Courses typically have between 14-20 obstacles, which can include tunnels, weave poles, tire jumps, seesaws, and pause tables where the dog must stop for a set amount of time. At each trial you and your dog will race around the unique courses designed for that day. All of this is done with your dog relying solely on the cues and body language you use to direct them on course.
All breeds, including mixed breeds, can participate in Agility – from the smallest to the largest of dogs.
