IAM Roadsmart
Advanced Rider Courses
Is it for you? ... What's involved?
Wirral Advanced Motorcyclists form one of the many specialist groups that support and deliver the IAM RoadSmart training programmes to improve rider skills. With us you’ll develop your riding skills using some key principles of the riding system used by police and emergency service riders.
Riding a motorcycle on today’s roads requires a multitude of skills and abilities. The fact is that whilst motorcyclists are among the most agile of road users we’re also some of the most vulnerable on our roads. Bikes are subject to more potential risks than other vehicles, not least from the actions of inattentive or unobservant road users around you.
By developing your own observation and control skills you’ll learn to ride defensively, better able to anticipate and avoid the routine hazards that motorcyclists face every day. You’ll also develop techniques of machine control that will enable you to ride with greater assurance, confidence and enjoyment, making the most of your bike’s capabilities.
By gaining the IAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider qualification you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ll have achieved recognition as one of the safest, most skilled and capable riders on the road.
Truly, if you enjoy riding your bike and want to improve - yes, we can help.

How much does an Advanced Rider Course cost?
Currently IAM RoadSmart courses cost £215. This includes your own copy of the ARC rider handbook which is based on the Police Roadcraft publication. Also included is your first year's membership of WAM as well.
Unlike car based courses for the Advanced Driver course, our qualified observers (all volunteers) will ride along with you on their own bike. We ask therefore that course associates make a donation of £15 per observed ride directly to their observer towards the additional costs of fuel etc for that training session.
At WAM we normally hold just 3 courses per year - each course though lasts between 6 and 9 weeks. Our advanced rider courses are based from our training location in Birkenhead where Wirral Council's Road Safety Team allow us to use their conference facilities and off road parking area for training.

WAM & Bikesafe
Wirral Advanced Motorcyclists work closely with Merseyside Police Bike Team and helped set up Bikesafe on Merseyside way back in 2005. We continue to play a key part in the delivery of Bikesafe on Merseyside.

Essentially Merseyside Bikesafe works hand in glove with Wirral Advanced Motorcyclists to deliver a skills check on your riding and provide an introduction to the benefits of further training. Very few forces utilise a 2 day "Bridging the Gap" programme - we think its great value and having experienced the benefits themselves, many riders then choose to undertake and Advanced Rider Course with IAM Roadsmart & WAM.
If you have been on a Bikesafe workshop in the last 3 years don't forget to apply the discount code Bikesafe admin sent you in your original booking!
Many of the Associates riders aiming to undertake their Advanced Rider Course with WAM have been inspired by what they learned on a Bikesafe workshop.
