Flute Mask

Everyone has been concerned about what to do to mitigate aerosols that occur when playing the flute. This video illustrates the problem with the flute, with large amounts of breath going directly into the room.

Here is a mask for the flute created by band director Julie Budd. Thank you, Julie! It is relatively easy to make and works great.

Here are the instructions for making the flute mask.

This video demonstrates making the flute mask.

Reducing aerosols by covering the flute or covering the end of the flute has also been explored. You can see in the first video above that, aside from the direct airstream coming from the mouth, it's likely that most of the aerosols come out of the end of the flute with a smaller amount coming from the tone holes.

Rose Johnson demonstrated a flute sock (like a bell cover) to mitigate these aerosols. This type of addition to the flute can be improvised with a piece of cloth and a rubber band.
