Dr. Xiaochuan Tian
Xiaochuan Tian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on mathematical modeling, applied analysis, and numerical methods for partial differential and integro-differential equations. Her current interests include nonlocal modeling, high-order and meshfree numerical schemes, asymptotically compatible and multiscale methods, as well as the emerging interface between machine learning and partial differential equations.
Tian received her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Columbia University in 2017. Prior to joining UC San Diego, she was an R.H. Bing Instructor at the University of Texas at Austin. Her work has been recognized by several prestigious honors, including the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, the NSF CAREER Award, the ICBS Frontiers of Science Award in Mathematics, and prizes from SIAM and the Association for Women in Mathematics. Her research is currently supported by NSF grants.
Seeing the Invisible: How Mathematics Reveals Hidden Worlds
Abstract:
Much of the world around us operates beyond the reach of our eyes -- the diffusion of heat, the formation of cracks in materials, the flow of energy seeking equilibrium, or the emergence of patterns from data. Yet mathematics gives us a way to see these invisible processes. Through equations, models, and computation, mathematics reveals patterns and connections hidden within the physical world.
In this talk, I will share how applied mathematics helps uncover the hidden structures behind natural and engineered systems. From the diffusion of energy to the collective behavior of interacting particles, mathematical models serve as microscopes of imagination. Along the way, I'll highlight how advances in computation and machine learning open new ways to explore complex systems, and how visualizing equations can reveal the hidden beauty and structure of mathematical ideas.
