Call for Participation
The WiML Mentorship Program is back for its 2023–2024 cycle with more to offer! Our goal is to provide targeted mentorship to early-career women and non-binary individuals in the machine learning community. This year, we are excited to feature two cohorts of mentees:
A post-graduate degree applicant cohort: 🎓
For those actively applying to Master’s or doctoral degree programs in machine learning during the 2023–2024 academic year.
A post-Master's / post-Ph.D. job seeker cohort: 💼
For recent or soon-to-be graduates of a Master’s or doctoral degree program actively looking for machine learning roles in industry in 2023 and early 2024.
We also need mentors! 🌱
Each year, we aim to serve a cohort of at least 25 mentees, but are often limited by the number of available mentors. If you are established in the field of machine learning, your service as a mentor could make the difference for one of our mentees!
Applications for the 2023–2024 Mentorship Program have closed. Please check back in Fall 2024 for next year!
Program Features
Individualized mentorship: 1-on-1 mentor-mentee matches based on expertise and experience.
Structured 1-on-1's: Discussion materials & support for 1-on-1 mentor-mentee meetings, focusing on the mentee's career transition goal (🎓 applying for post-grad degrees or 💼 applying for industry jobs).
Specialized panel sessions: Tailored for each cohort:
🎓 Drafting personal statements, finding academic references, applying for fellowships, and figuring out next steps at the end of the application cycle.
💼 Transitioning a CV to a résumé, creating a growth plan, preparing for interviews, and negotiating and deciding between offers.
Community building: Connect with fellow mentees via WiML's online discussion forum!
Office hours: With WiML Board Members and WiML Organizers.
And more: Additional benefits to be announced! ♥️

Expectations & Time Commitment
We intend to match mentors to a single mentee; in exceptional cases, we may reach out to mentors to ask their availability to take on an additional mentee.
We ask that mentees be actively applying for post-graduate degree programs or industry jobs in machine learning during 2023–2024, so that we can prioritize support to mentees with time-sensitive needs.
We recommend bi-weekly to monthly 1-on-1 mentor-mentee meetings. Please only sign up if you can commit to meeting regularly for the 5- to 6-month duration of the program (September / October 2023 to February 2024), so that we can make sure that participants get the most out of it. Your commitment is valuable and appreciated! 🪴
