Wimbledon Chess Club is open to anyone, from absolute beginners to elite players.
Junior Coaching (free) is run in a similar way to an "after school club", where children can learn the game ( and then hopefully progress on to match chess once they have learned the rules, how to use a clock and how to record their moves). Each session starts with problem solving while we wait for late-comers and then has a 5-minute lesson on a topic for the week, followed by games against each other.
Social Chess is open to all members of all ages, but is predominantly available for players that either can't find the time to play match chess or haven't yet plucked up the courage to try it and so just want to play for fun! The club runs large quarterly events in the pavilion of South Park Gardens (3 rapids and 1 blitz), but also runs social chess events three times a week.
League Matches are open to players trying to improve their (ECF) ratings. The club has 11 teams across 3 leagues (Surrey, Thames Valley and London). We are always looking for new talent to bolster our squads, so please get in touch!
The full list of all our fixtures/meetings and where they are being held can be found in the calendar on the Events page.
Wimbledon Chess Club has been running for nearly 150 years. The club is run by a committee of members that meets annually to discuss the past season's successes, where we can improve and the plans for the forth-coming season.
