Steen Madsen, from Denmark, discovered basket making through his early love of old handcrafts such as Stone Age flint knapping, rope making, hide tanning, and woodcarving. In 1979, he was introduced to basket making while working with 7500-year-old Danish Stone Age eel traps made of willow. Soon he was growing his own willow and teaching workshops in basket making. For the last 25 years, he has been a full time basket maker, growing willow, teaching basket making, educating 3 apprentices, and weaving baskets. Much of his weaving work is for museums, film and theatre productions and for artists. Steen has written two books about basket making – one for beginners -Flet med pil -and the other about Square work - Kurve med Hjorner. He is an avid collector of old baskets and his collection extends from 1840-1965. This is all part of his searching for knowledge about the cultural history of baskets and basket making, which could lead to his third book.

Steen says this style of basket is his favorite – he owns a collection of old ones – around 60-70 pieces! Wouldn’t we like to see that collection? Instead, work with Steen during this class to create a Fishing Creel Style basket that can be used for fishing or as a bag. Woven without a mold, the techniques, shaping and weaving of the lid will offer a variety of skills to enhance your “basket vocabulary.” The leather harness system will not be included in the workshop, but will be discussed and explained for you to make on your own.
