Beth Hester began making baskets in 1975, initially experimenting with coiled work, an extension of her love of hand-sewing and constructing. In the early 1980's she and her husband, Scott Gilbert, learned basket making from Ollie and Lestel Childress and they are honored to be bearers of south central Kentucky’s white oak tradition. Beth has also studied basketry with Master Weaver Leona Waddell of Cecilia, Kentucky as well as other teachers in North America, Germany, France, Ireland and Denmark. Her most recent love is for willow--skeining, bark and rod work. At The Basket Maker's Catalog, Beth creates patterns, products and learning opportunities through teaching and hosting other professional basket making instructors in and around Allen County.

Be inspired by the beautiful colors and textures of willow bark as you create willow fabric panels–suitable for mounting or framing. Using basic weaves of twining, twill, tabby and waling, you'll investigate the possibilities and combinations of willow bark, skeins and rods. In this two-day workshop, students will make one large panel or two smaller panels; you may choose to take your piece home to frame it or paint a canvas in class and stitch your weaving to the canvas making it easy to hang.
Approximate Size: Panels will vary from 7” x 9” to 11” x 14” (create two of the smaller panels in the workshop or one larger panel)
Weaving Level: All levels
Cost: $360 (class fee $295 / material fee $65)

In our two-day exploration of the beautiful Perigord design, students will create two or three flat trays using this spiral technique. Delving into basic construction and focusing on learning the Perigord's beginning, you'll add a few rows around the edge of each weaving, creating a rimmed disk or tray. There will be an option to purchase willow bark to cut into strips and incorporate into the weave. The trays are lovely to hang on a wall or enjoy using them as serving platters for bread and fruit. "I love Perigord and am grateful to Eva Siedenfaden of Denmark for teaching me this technique. " BH
Approximate Size: Sizes will vary from 11" to 16" diameter
Weaving Level: Intermediate to advanced - hand strength needed
Cost: $355 (class fee $295 / material fee $60)
