Roger retired as a member of the Black Hat Club
with his 38 years of service with WTB!
How long have you played with WTB, and how did you come to join us? I've played with WTB since 1988. Jen Horn and my daughter, Alison, both played the flute and decided they wanted to play in the band. They convinced their dads (Dave Horn and me) to join with them. Both of them grew up and moved away. Dave and I remain.
Which instruments do you play? Baritone Horn (treble clef)
Do you play in any other local bands or musical groups? No, but I did play in bands in secondary school and college.
Are you originally from Vermont? No. I was raised in MA and I moved to VT after college at UMASS Amherst (my mother was raised in St. Albans and Randolph VT) .
What kinds of things do you like to do when you aren't playing music?
Professionally, I'm a retired information analyst. I was employed by IBM, Trinity College, Vermont Technical College, IDX, and Wyeth/PBM. I taught as an adjunct professor in the Computer Science Dept. of UVM.
Personally, I enjoy walking, swimming, kayaking, and serving on non-profit boards. I have hiked the entire Long Trail in order (from South to North) from 2003-2008 and completed threee 26.2 mile marathons (Plattsburgh and two in Washington, D.C.) in the early 1980s. [Fun fact: I learned in 2025 that Chapin Kaynor (another baritone player) and I ran in the same 10-mile race in Essex in 1982.] I was a founding member of two non-profit organizations (Make-A-Wish Foundation of VT (1989) and the Lake Iroquois Association (2007), serving as president of both. I have also served as a director of the boards of the Federation of Vermont Lakes and Ponds, Williston Town Band (past president), Wake Robin Residents' Association (Shelburne, past president), and the Wake Robin Corporate Board.
What else should we know about you? I am a 30-year veteran of the VT Air National Guard (retired as a Colonel). I published the book, Answering the Wish, which documents the founding of and early years of Make-a-Wish of Vermont. I am currently writing my memoir.
