How long have you played with WTB, and how did you come to join us? I first played with the WTB in 2017 as many friends in the band asked me to play. Conducting the Burlington Concert Band from 2018-2022, it was such a joy to do a joint concert with the Williston Town Band in Battery Park in Burlington.
Which instruments do you play? The trumpet is my principal instrument, but I can play any brass instrument. I now have played the trumpet for 71 years and hope to keep playing! I also can play percussion.
Do you play in any other local bands? In Vermont, I have played in the Vermont Jazz Ensemble, Vermont Mozart Festival Orchestra, Green Mountain Brass Band, Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra, Green Mountain Mahler Festival Orchestra, Vermont Symphonic Winds, Yankee Brass Band, Vermont Trumpet Ensemble, Vermont Wind Ensemble, UVM Pep Band. I have conducted the Burlington Concert Band, UVM Concert Band, Vermont Wind Ensemble, Catamount Brass Band (now the Green Mountain Brass Band), and Vermont Brass Ensemble at UVM.
Are you originally from Vermont? No. I’m from Ohio and graduated from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. I taught music in public schools for almost 40 years, even four years as an elementary principal.
What kinds of things do you like to do when you aren't playing music? I do many walking and biking exercises to keep in shape.
Professionally, I’ve been collecting and researching the history of town bands in Vermont.
Personally: Family Genealogy research is an ongoing project. Traveling is one of the high priorities for both me and my wife, Stephanie.
What else should we know about you? I love living in Vermont and visiting many historical sites. My wife and I are members of the “251 Club” and have visited all towns and cities in Vermont.
