My name is William (Ryan) Romps, and I am a senior attending Leonardtown Highschool. Diving straight into it, I was born in Pennsylvania but soon moved to Virginia where I spent most of my youth. I moved to California in 3rd grade and then 18 months later, moved to Maryland. I have two 11-year-old dogs; brother(Cruz) and sister(Lila). I love math and enjoy doing complex algorithmic equations. I am outgoing and comfortable talking in group scenarios. I love snacking on food but am too lazy to prepare it myself so I try to find creative ways to make my family cook up something.
I’ve been playing piano for the past 11 years. I used to take lessons back in Virginia and then continued those lessons with my teacher via Skype in California and Maryland all the way through my freshman year of high school (since discontinued lessons for now because of schedule). I can play an array of pieces of all sorts; Fur Elise (Beethoven), Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Greenday), Interstellar (Hanz Zimmer), etc. I partially have this ability called “perfect pitch”, which is where you can listen to a song being played and then replicate the song on an instrument of your choice. The reason I say I partially have it is that, although I can play by ear, my replication of the song is in some cases not super accurate. Still, I’ve learned many songs with this ability and have retained them in memory. My repertoire is permanently etched into my brain, so whenever I want to play a certain song I simply just think of how to play it and then play away.
My sports journey is still commencing right now. I’ve played soccer for the past 11 years and ran track for the past 3. Soccer is my main sport and I enjoy every aspect of it. I used to play as a striker, but ever since I made my travel team, I have become a very formidable center-back and outside-back. I made varsity for Leonardtown my sophomore year and have started with varsity junior-senior year as well. I plan on taking soccer a step further by going to a D1 college with a good soccer program in order to play an extra few years and possibly go pro.
Part of being a good soccer player is being well-conditioned. In order to achieve this, aside from practice, I work out 4-5 days a week for strength building and conditioning. In doing so, I became the first soccer player to run a sub 5 minute mile at tryouts. I also run track in order to maintain running shape. I am a distance runner turned sprinter. I ran the mile and 4x8 relay (I was usually the starter or anchor). I also like running in the 400-meter open, 4x4 relay, 4x2 relay, and 4x1 relay. My personal records in those events are 4:53 in the mile, 2:08.1 in the 800, 51.00 in the 400, 22.5 in the 200, and ~11.3 in the 100. I hold the school record in the 500 meter race with a time of 1:08.35, and the indoor 4x4 with a team time of 3:37.27. I also won 4A East regionals in the 500 meter race. I plan on sticking with track through my senior year just to keep up my endurance and speed.
Out of all subjects, math is my absolute favorite. With this, engineering becomes even more enjoyable for me. I haven't done much with engineering in the past besides architectural-type engineering with Legos. However this being said, I am a very fast learner, so picking up on the different types of engineering will be a fun and easy journey. I hope to accomplish many things with engineering and then eventually proceed to have that as my job. I also am interested in business management/ finances that deal more with statistics. Actuarial sciences and decision sciences both peak my interest.
