My name is William Carroll, and I research, teach, and write about contemporary East Asian media and culture, particularly Japanese cinema. I have a PhD in Cinema & Media Studies and East Asian Languages & Civilizations from the University of Chicago, and have taught courses on international film, animation, Japanese literature and popular culture, and other subjects at UChicago, IU-Bloomington, and Duke University. I am also passionate about film programming, particularly rare films and on 35mm or 16mm prints, and have organized numerous film series and screening events focusing on East Asian Cinema.
I've published numerous articles and book chapters, but am most excited about my book on Suzuki Seijun coming out next month. I have also begun work on a second research project on Japanese cinephile culture and its relationship to film production.
