My name is William Leopold. I have not decided what career path I want to take, but I am interested in mechanical and electrical engineering. I have developed an interest in this path because there is a long line of engineers in my family. My grandfather was the main reason I decided to pursue the engineering field. He worked as an electrical engineer at the National Security Agency. At NSA my grandfather worked with computer software and programming. He also worked with signal intelligence during the Cold War. Most of the work that he did at NSA was Top Secret, so he was unable to tell me everything about his job. After talking with my grandfather about his job, I was intrigued to learn more about the engineering field, and all its possibilities.
I am currently a Sophomore at Great Mills High School. Ever since I was in grade school, I have grown very fond of math. To achieve my career path I have taken Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Physics, Pre Calculus and I am currently in AP Calculus and AP Physics. All of these math classes are very important in my future career so I can solve mathematical problems. Currently I am starting my second year in the Engineering program at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career & Technology Center.
Throughout my high school experience I have played for the Great Mills soccer and tennis team. While on the soccer team I have learned how to work as a team, how to follow directions, how to accept challenges, and how to improve from them. On the tennis team I learned how to take suggestions from others on how to improve my ability as a player. Outside of school I have volunteered in a kids triathlon and have helped out with Special Olympics. Volunteering in these activities helps build leadership, teamwork, patience, and how to work with people of all different abilities.
Over the summer I took a new job running concessions at Point Lookout State Park. In this position I worked to keep track of the inventory, manage a cash register, and provide help and friendly service to the park visitors. I also continued serving as a soccer referee throughout the school year and improved my skill level allowing me to server as a center referee and also referee more competitive games.
After graduating from high school I plan to attend a four year college or university. I believe that attending a four year college or university will increase my education in the engineering field. Also, having a higher education in engineering will make me a better candidate in the job market.
After going to a four year college or university for engineering and getting an engineering job, I can encourage students in my community to join the engineering field. I can help society and the world by providing innovative ideas and expanding on already made ones. My contributions will have a positive impact on the world and I will solve challenging problems that can be used to improve people from all societies.
