Saxophone

The saxophone is a woodwind instrument that is made of brass. Like the clarinet, it is a single reed instrument that reads the treble clef. Because of its shape and weight it must be held with a neck strap that hooks onto the saxophone. We normally have between 8 - 12 students chosen to the play the saxophone in our 6th grade Wiley band! The majority of our saxophone players take private lessons although it is not required for this instrument. The saxophone has resistance because of the reed you blow against. The saxophone belongs to a large family that ranges from small to very large instruments! In 6th grade everyone learns the Alto but you could play the Alto, Tenor or Baritone Sax in 7th and 8th grade. Listen to the 3 short videos below to see if the saxophone could be one of your top picks for band next year!

Demonstration of the Saxophone

The United States Army Field Band have put together a short video demonstrating what the instrument looks like and how it sounds! Enjoy!
