The challenges we face to save biodiversity are complex, and can only be solved through stewarding creative, innovative leaders who bring in their fresh perspectives and insights.
WildMed was started by two conservation professionals, a vet, Dr. Jessica Emerson (she/her), and a program manager, Indie Lewis (they/them). Together, they envision a future where everyone has a seat at the table. Dr. Emerson and Indie are joined by an ever-growing network of WildMed Mentors - skilled veterinary professionals who are likewise dedicated to this mission of empowering veterinary students.

WildMed was an amazing experience that balanced lecture and hands on learning. White Oak was like no place I’ve ever been before, and I left with a new confidence in my veterinary abilities. This program was a collaborative and supportive space where I felt comfortable learning and making mistakes. I found it especially valuable to meet mentors in the field who were able to share their career paths and advice. This experience has made a future career in wildlife/zoo medicine seem truly achievable.

The WildMed Fellowship was an incredible and enriching experience that I would highly recommend to any veterinary student interested in exotic, wildlife, or zoo medicine. The week at White Oak offered a perfect balance of hands-on learning and informative lectures, surrounded by supportive mentors and peers. I especially valued the diversity of backgrounds and experiences among students and mentors, which made the program more collaborative. The continued mentorship and monthly meetings with the mentors and other veterinarians provide lasting guidance and valuable professional connections. The fellowship helped me define my focus on wildlife and conservation medicine and solidified my passion for making a meaningful impact in this field. My only lighthearted complaint is that the week on-site was not nearly long enough.

I am very grateful for my time in the WildMed program because it gave me opportunities that I never expected to have at this point in my veterinary career. Because of the program, I have gained confidence in my veterinary knowledge while being challenged in new ways. What I have most enjoyed about the program is the mentorship that has already proven extremely valuable, as it has helped me grow more comfortable in connecting with professionals in the field. I highly recommend the program for any veterinary student interested in wildlife and zoological medicine as this a very rare and unique opportunity!

What I enjoyed most about WildMed was our one-week clinical experience at White Oak, where we got amazing hands-on opportunities I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else and learned from incredible veterinarians in the field. The entire staff was so welcoming, and the mentors were beyond incredible—each brought something different and shared their unique journey into the profession. They were so open and genuine, always willing to answer questions, talk about life, and offer guidance. What started as a week of mentorship turned into lifelong connections and a renewed sense of confidence in myself. WildMed showed me that a career in zoo and wildlife medicine is not only possible but full of different paths to get there. It’s shaped how I see my future and reminded me exactly why I fell in love with this field.
