Across the globe, wildlife populations are in decline. We need veterinarians specialized in wildlife medicine to help address the challenges imperiled species are facing.
WildMed is centered around one simple goal - to make a future in wildlife medicine possible for veterinary students from all backgrounds, economic standings and lived experiences. We seek to connect with students with a passion for wildlife, who want community, training, mentorship and career growth. Student accepted into the program benefit from a 6-month training program are proudly recognized as WildMed Fellows.
WildMed Fellows receive rigorous clinical training aimed to jumpstart a career making a difference for wildlife. Fellows benefit from a cohort of like-minded students, expert instructors, and hands-on learning experiences hosted at White Oak Conservation. The program will have a focus on terrestrial wildlife due to the host training site, but elements of aquatic medicine will be included.
WildMed programming takes place from June - December. All participants must have completed their second year of vet school prior to the start of the program. As part of the program, Fellows take part in a week-long program retreat and training session in person.
This one-of-a-kind program addresses a critical shortage of conservation and wildlife-focused programs for veterinary students. As part of our commitment to a more just, equitable world, WildMed is a completely free program to all participants. Travel stipends for the in-person summer training are also available for those with financial need. During the summer training, all fellows will receive accommodations and all meals. Following completion of the program, WildMed Fellows will benefit from a free student membership to the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians.
WildMed is a competitive program, designed to find and equip future wildlife veterinarians for success. Fellows are expected to be willing to take on additional work (3-5 hours per month) for the duration of the program.
All WildMed Fellows are expected to participate fully in the program, including:
Attending the WildMed Fellow Retreat at White Oak
Participating in program clinical experiences, discussions, and workshops
Working on projects, and joining virtual meetings
