Suspended in flight, Steve Croquett’s trio of sculptural Flies flutters somewhere between insect and fish, lure and leaper. Their arched backs and twisted wire tails capture a moment of kinetic energy — mid-cast, mid-pounce, mid-something wild.
Forged from barbed wire, fishing tackle, and salvaged boating gear, these works reimagine discarded metal as dynamic, animated creatures. There’s a touch of humour in their oversized forms, a wink in their poses — a kind of rusted-out ballet in the reeds.
Winner of the Waste to Art Award at the 2014 Lake Light Sculpture exhibition, Flies nods to Jindabyne’s deep connection to trout and salmon fishing. Croquett, a local artist and regular at Lake Light and Sculpture by the Sea, reminds us that one person’s scrap is another’s soaring sculpture.
