Getting to Franshhoek
Getting to Franshhoek
South Africa is well connected internationally. Here’s what you need to know to get yourself to Franschhoek.
Visas
South Africa offers visa-free access to citizens of many countries, including most EU nations, the UK, USA, UAE, and Australia. Citizens of some other countries will need a visa in advance.
Always check the latest requirements for your specific passport on the South African Department of Home Affairs website or via your nearest SA embassy — visa rules can change.
Important for All International Travelers
If you are traveling with children, South Africa requires an unabridged birth certificate for all children even if both parents are traveling together. This is strictly enforced. Do not overlook this.
Flights
The main international gateway to the Cape Winelands is Cape Town International Airport (CPT). Most long-haul flights connect through Johannesburg (JNB / O.R. Tambo) or directly into Cape Town.
Flying from Dubai
FlyDubai and Emirates both operate direct services to Cape Town and Johannesburg. Flydubai flies direct to CPT; Emirates connects via JNB. Flight time is approximately 8–9 hours.
Flying from Europe
Most major carriers (British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Air France) operate direct or one-stop services to Cape Town. Direct Cape Town flights from London Heathrow are available on British Airways and FlySafair.
Flying from the USA
Typically one stop via London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, or directly via Johannesburg. Delta operates a direct JFK–CPT service.
Within South Africa
Domestic connections to Cape Town are easy. Kulula, FlySafair, and Airlink all operate frequent affordable routes from Johannesburg if you land there first.
At the Airport
Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is modern, well-organised, and approximately 45 minutes from Franschhoek by car. Car hire, taxis, and private transfers are all available at arrivals.
A Few Travel Do’s & Don’ts for South Africa
Do
• Book accommodation and transport in advance — July is a popular time in the Winelands.
• Carry your passport when moving between provinces or in areas where ID may be requested.
• Tip service staff — 10–15% is standard and expected in restaurants and for personal services.
• Use reputable transfer services or Uber for transport. Uber works well in Cape Town and the Winelands.
• Drink lots of water — the dry winter air can be dehydrating, especially for those arriving from humid climates.
• Try the local food! Braai, bobotie, biltong, koeksisters, malva pudding — South Africa has an incredible food culture.
Don’t
• Leave valuables visible in a parked car. This is a common issue across South Africa.
• Walk alone at night in unfamiliar areas, especially in the city. Stick with the group.
• Expect to use Rands in Dubai before you leave — exchange currency on arrival or use ATMs.
• Underestimate driving distances. Franschhoek feels close to Cape Town on a map but mountain passes can slow things down. Budget extra time.
• Miss a chance to explore — you’re in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Stay an extra day if you can.
