The Women in Economic Theory (WiET) student conference, organized by PhD students at the University of Chicago, is the first graduate student conference which expressly aims to promote women's participation in Economic Theory. Given that women are under-represented in our field (theory) compared to economics academia as a whole (e.g., the Journal of Economic Theory reports that only 5% of its editors are women compared to 21% across all Economics and Accounting journals), our goal is to use this platform to encourage women authors and to open up opportunities for networking and collaboration.

Its inaugural edition will be held in person during October 21-22, 2022 at The University of Chicago, featuring graduate student presentations and keynote addresses by prominent scholars of Economic Theory. While our goal is to encourage women authors, submission and participation are open to all graduate students interested in Economic Theory and would offer them an excellent opportunity to present their work, exchange ideas with their peers and receive feedback from a discussant and a diverse audience.

Submissions: Submission deadline for papers is July 31st 11:59pm CDT, 2022 (UPD: deadline extended till August 5th 11:59pm CDT, 2022). Each potential presenter may submit any number of papers. Any paper generally falling within any of the fields of microeconomic, macroeconomic, econometric or behavioral economic theory are acceptable. Acceptance/rejection decisions will be communicated by September 1st, 2022. Submissions are welcomed and encouraged from all graduate students. However, in keeping with our goals, preference would be given to submissions with at least one woman author.

Please, use this form to make your submission.

Registration: If you are not presenting but wish to attend the conference, please register here (open till October 10).

Presentation format: Presentations are 35-40 minutes long, with 10 minutes of discussion afterwards. We ask presenters to also act as discussants for a paper (although we exempt job market candidates from this whenever possible).

Expenses: Registration and meals during the conference will be covered, but we are not able to pay for participants’ travel or accommodation. For the latter, if requested, we will match conference participants with local student hosts.
