Wieland Racing is wanting to create an opportunity to have fun this winter, as well as see who is the KOM/QOM of Des Moines for the second year in a row. This challenge will take course over the month of February. Weekly battles will take place against other local runners for glory and $100 gift card to Fitness Sports. Second and 3rd place finishers will win $20 to Fitness Sports. New this year is the opportunity for all round winners to receive a discounted Blazing 5k entry that can be used by the winner/friend of the winner. Randomly selected participants will receive free swag at the end of each round.
This year we will be trying something new! Versus the bracket style competition it will be a Mario Kart Cascading Point System for 4 weeks. The fastest athlete will earn the most points based on total participants signed up. From there each finisher will earn -1 based on their position. If you are unable to complete the segment in the given week you will earn 0 points for that week. The grand winner will be based on the total number of points.
To help equalize the event a bit more we are doing time adjusted measures. **
Runablaze Iowa (or other local elite teams such as colleges) will be adding 30 seconds per mile. If the segment is 0.32 miles, 9.6 seconds will be added.
We will be having the women racing against the men heads up. They will be getting 40 seconds per mile removed from their time. If the segment is 0.32 miles, 12.8 seconds will be removed.
If you are over the age of 40-49 (Masters), you will be getting 10 seconds per mile removed. 50+ (Grand Masters), you will be getting 20 seconds per mile removed.
If you are a women over 40, the times will stack and so on.
** Adjustments may be made throughout the challenge at the beginning of the week as we fine tune the event. See the specific segment for details.
Entries are closed!
Example below for 1 week. Weeks will stack and so on!
Segment must be completed as a run; it can be the only part of the run or a small segment during a larger run. No bikes, rollerblades, skis, or anything else you can think of. Please follow this rule to keep things fun!
You must complete and upload this activity during the week scheduled. No withholding data.
In order to collect results, you will need to follow Blake Whalen and Tyson Wieland. They will be getting notifications when you complete an activity to get the most up to date results.
You can complete the segment more than once; best result will be used.
Time is based on what Strava says, not what you think you hit. GPS may vary, but that's the name of the game!
Week: 1/31/2022 -> 2/6/2022
For the first week we will be taking the challenge to THE AMP, once again. It is a flat, fast, tracklike loop that measures 0.32 starting from the furthest south point. It takes place on innermost circle at the amphitheater. Given it's tracklike nature it is the perfect opportunity to take a few shots at your fastest time. Another bonus is that it is cleared during the wintertime, so it is safe to go fast! The Wieland Racing team will also attempt to clear it more the week of.

For the second week we will be mixing things up from last year with a HILL of a good time. Sycamore Slope is decently wide path leading up MLK Junior Parkway. This can be easily accessed by parking at the nearby sculpture park, or perhaps Smokey Row on the top of the hill to enjoy a beverage (before or after). The segment starts at Woodland Ave and finishes just before Croker St/Cottage Grove, this allows for a stress free segment as no cars will be intersecting at any point during the actual segment.
